Get Into Refereeing

Make a Difference to the Game

support with development

chance to progress

Whether you are playing in an eleven-a-side match, a small-sided competition or a new format such as Futsal, one person will remain a constant presence: the referee. There are over 1,600 registered referees in Essex... but there is always space for more!

They range from those just setting out in the game to individuals who have progressed to the FA Premier and Football Leagues. We support the development of match officials from initially booking onto courses, in gaining promotion and also via the form of mentoring and assessment through a referee’s career.

Get Into Refereeing Sessions

'Get Into Refereeing' is an introductory, two-hour interactive session in advance of the FA Referees Course, which will ensure you are fully aware of the commitments and responsibilities you face as a referee.

Once candidates have attended the Get Into Refereeing introductory session, they will then be sent an E-Mail where they can book onto the course. The whole aim of the new FA Referees course is to produce active match officials who will be able to go out and refereeing within the county's local leagues.

we'll get you out into the middle

Reasons to Referee

You can start to get involved from the age of just 14, with specific pathways in place within both the men’s and women’s game if you wish to move through the levels.

You’ll get lots of helpful advice from the outset, including details about the laws of the game and guidelines on fitness and nutrition. We also back the initiatives of the Essex County Referees Association, who provide additional assistance.
