County Office Staff Update

Community Coach Sam Robinson and Referees & Welfare Administrator Rhys Elmer are settling into their positions at the County Office in Chelmsford havi
Sam started in October and he currently assists with the delivery of programmes across the region, including Vauxhall Football ‘Mash-Ups’ aimed at tackling the participation dropout from teenagers in the 14-17 age group. Chelmsford-based West Ham United fan Sam used the traditional ‘jumpers for goalposts’ when he grew-up playing the game with his brother. He sees football as a vehicle for social inclusion and a gateway to a healthier lifestyle.

He says the player development stories created in grassroots football highlight the power the sport has on creating a positive effect upon participants. Sam views his challenges as connecting, and enthusing with, a variety of backgrounds. He wants to break down barriers to participation which players may have had from previous bad experiences. This will be achieved through Mash-Ups and general recreational football, which could generate new teams.

Sam is one of two Community Coaches as colleague Kevin Watts combines his role with that of a Football Development Officer for Group One in Tendring, Colchester, Braintree and Maldon. An Arsenal supporter, Kevin coaches at LOASS FC in the Echo Junior League outside of his County FA responsibilities, which embrace at the ‘delivery end’ of the spectrum through Mash-Ups, school-club links, Soccability and Mars ‘Just Play’ sessions.

Rhys, meanwhile, joined the County Office in the New Year. His first football experience was when he trained with Tollesbury Juniors FC as his father was involved with the club at the time. He’s always been based in and around the Maldon area, playing in both the Blackwater & Dengie and Colchester & District Youth Leagues.

He has now been coaching Tiptree Jobserve Under 8s for two seasons and he loves enabling the younger age groups to learn the fundamentals of football whilst staying active. Rhys’ role consists of assisting Referee Development Officer James Lisher and County Welfare Officer Helen Hever with their daily operations. He also supports Arsenal.
