NICHOLAS WYBACKS    0  v  2    SUNGATE

Beaming after his relatively unknown side recorded their first competition win, Davenport explained: "I was more than delighted with every single one of them and they made me so proud. I think we went into the game as underdogs in our first season in the Premier Cup, a sort of Newcomers vs Old Hands kind of match. But we stuck to our game plan and didn't allow our opponents to play."

Wybacks were the first to create a noteworthy opening as Terry Harris had two stabs at goal in only the 4th minute, the second sailing over from close range. The next effort didn't arrive until a 21st-minute free-kick was earned on the edge of the box at the same end by diminutive forward Lee Guiver though he arrowed the subsequent dead ball a yard over the target.

Five minutes later, Sungate edged in front in spectacular style courtesy of Scott Walsh. He found himself with space to shoot twenty-five yards out and took full advantage, striking cleanly into the far top corner of Marc Palmer's goal. Paul revealed: "Scott doesn't score many and I've spoken to him since and he said when he first took the shot he didn't think it was going in and it must have dipped at the last minute!"

Clearcut chances were few and far between in the first period, although Sungate did go close to extending their advantage with a Ricki Mackin free-kick forcing Palmer to parry away on 41 minutes and limit the damage going into the interval.

Wybacks were by no means out of the race after the break, as Guiver proved eight minutes into the period when a moment's hesitancy from the Sungate defence allowed him to send a half-hit shot goalwards which forced 'keeper Ross Frew to touch wide of the post.

However, the Sunday Corinthian League team weren't to be denied as they attempted to play out time towards the end of the game. Holding the ball up in the corner of the field, Joe Turner then tricked his way around the outside and into the danger area in the box before laying a tap-in on a plate for substitute David Limber, who put the game beyond doubt.

Now Boss Davenport hopes the silverware will boost confidence ahead of some more crucial fixtures Sungate have coming-up: "We go into our potential decider in the League on a high now and we can't wait!"
