A late header from Graham Poole sealed a first Essex Sunday Junior Trophy triumph  for Wickbeech as Maiden were beaten 2-1 at Wivenhoe Town.

In a hard-fought showpiece at Broad Lane, Poole nodded home Bobby Hardy's centre with just sixty seconds remaining to clinch the trophy after a young Maiden side had pegged Wickbeech back just after half-time.

The game started slowly, but Wickford-based outfit Wickbeech took the lead on twenty minutes, Tim Bird stabbing home Hardy's low corner from close range. Wickbeech soon looked to increase their advantage and Hardy turned and hit a stinging fifteen-yard volley over the top before Neil George struck from an angle inches wide of the upright.

Maiden's first real opportunity arrived in stoppage time, Lee Bacon nodding Michael Moore's centre just wide of 'keeper Nick Chester's goal. However, just twelve minutes after the break, a spirited Maiden side levelled. Chester was adjudged to have carried the ball outside of the area and the resulting free kick saw Mark Cowley's fierce deflected shot find the bottom corner.

The goal gave Maiden heart and confidence and they began to take the game to Wickbeech but, despite good spells of pressure, Wickbeech stood firm and began to knock on the door again as the game wore on. 'Beech's Alan Coote hit a low twenty-five-yard drive inches off target before the winner arrived on 89 minutes, Poole finding himself in the right place inside the six-yard box to get his head to a powerful left-flank cross by Hardy.

Maiden had late appeals for a spot-kick, but it was Wickbeech who celebrated engraving their name on the Trophy for the first time.
