SUNDAY JUNIOR TROPHY

FINAL

     Noaklands  7  v 0  Wakering Hart

Sun 26 April 2009
at Barrows Farm
  10:30am k.o

Chelmsford & District Sunday Social League outfit Noaklands extinguished the memories of their 2007 Sunday Junior Trophy Final defeat by comprehensively overcoming Wakering Hart 7-0 in the 2009 showpiece.

Although the scoreline suggests a one-sided nature to the fixture, Wakering could count themselves unfortunate to have seen the woodwork rattled on three separate occasions at a time when a fight back was still feasible, a fact that Noaklands manager Jody Prevwell acknowledged after the match.

"We knew what to expect from Wakering, even though they had a few players that were not involved when we went to watch them," he explained. "It was a good game, and I have to pay credit to our opponents as they are only in Division Five of their League. It was a good footballing game and the quality of both teams was exceptional."

Indeed, Wakering Hart had three opportunities to net in the opening 20 minutes. Paul Horwood brought a fine save out of Noaklands goalkeeper Matt Kelly as his fierce shot was turned around the post, then David Webb's snap-shot was beaten away from close range. Shaun Bennett was the third to test the custodian as he took down Alex Tandy's through ball and blasted straight at Kelly.

Prevwell's side were eager to get the ball forward to strikers Craig Gillam and Jamie Williams, with one move in just the 7th minute seeing Gillam collide with Dean Jones in the Wakering goal as he chipped the ball wide. Noaklands did edge in front, however, on 26 minutes. Ricky Thompson's initial effort was charged down by Tandy, but the midfielder followed-up to chip over the defender and Jamie Williams raced onto the ball to lob Jones.

Thompson was involved again three minutes later as the second goal quickly followed. His corner from the right-hand side was drifted out to Captain Gillam, who positioned himself on the left-hand apex of the penalty area. The skilful front man connected with the ball magnificently on the volley, sending it searing into the bottom right-hand corner.

Wakering Hart appeared to have been rocked by this double blow but, led by playmaker Matthew Stubbs and Horwood up front, they summoned a response. First Horwood's free-kick from inside the 'D' cannoned off of the base of the right-hand post, then Stubbs' cultured pass out wide allowed Horwood to centre for Webb, who narrowly failed to find a touch in front of goal that would have continued his run of scoring in every round of the competition.

Instead it was Basildon-based Noaklands who netted again just over five minutes before half-time. Thompson and Dan Williams exchanged passes in a short corner routine and the eventual cross was chested down by Lee Mertens, his strong strike deflecting off of a defender on the line and past a helpless Jones.

Thompson hit the bar with a cross-shot in first-half stoppage time, but it was Wakering Hart who were denied by the frame of the goal twice inside the opening ten minutes of the second period; Webb's cross was stabbed against the outside of the left-hand upright by a stretching Stubbs before Horwood curled a right-footed effort against the opposite post, with Stubbs' rebound heroically blocked by Justin Aves.

Confirmation that it was not to be the Southend Sunday League club's day arrived just after the hour mark as Noaklands added a fourth. Gillam sprung the offside trap, racing onto Thompson's through-ball, and although Jones kept out the initial shot, the forward followed-up to bundle over the line.

Jones did push away Thompson's shot as it seemed destined to find the top right-hand corner, but he could do nothing from preventing Gillam registering a hat-trick on 77 minutes. Thompson was tripped by Bennett just inside the penalty area, and Gillam stroked in the resultant spot-kick.

Gillam added his fourth of the morning on 84 minutes as he sprinted clear of the Wakering defence to slot easily past Jones, and in the second minute of injury time, he crossed for Lance McDowell to convert from close range and conclude the scoring.

"We made a pressing start and found our feet to get on top early on," Prevwell revealed of his game plan. "We decided on a 3-5-2 formation and took it to them with our pace up front. We had a lot of good players - Lance McDowell was Man-of-the-Match for me - and we need to take this form into our last two League games now. In the end, we had a little bit too much experience for them, our nerves were settled and I am over the moon!"
