SATURDAY PREMIER CUP

FINAL

Holland  1 v 0  Maldon St Mary's

Wednesday 15th April 2009
at New Lodge  7:45pm k.o

A single goal from Lee Nash left Holland manager Tony Davis "elated" as his team claimed the Essex Saturday Premier Cup crown with a 1-0 win over Maldon St. Mary's.

"I didn't think the game would be full of chances, and in truth it could have gone either way," was Davis' assessment of a tight Cup final at Billericay Town F.C. "There was respect there from both teams, but we could only do our job, and I thought the lads were fantastic."

Holland were dealt a severe blow when their captain, Wayne Morris, was carried off of the field just 17 minutes into the clash with a suspected hamstring injury, with Maldon having made the brighter start. Tom Broadhurst, who provided a threat on the right flank for St. Mary's all evening, was unfortunate in just the 2nd minute as his snap-shot from a Glenn Moss corner was turned around the post by Alex Ball in the Holland goal.

At the mid-way point of the first half, the Clacton-based outfit began to edge into the tie, with Warren Taylor narrowly failing to convert Nash's skimming centre at the far post before Craig Nice saved Joe Martin's speculative forty-yard effort.

The game's decisive moment arrived 37 minutes in. Moss appeared set to instigate an attack of his own for St. Mary's, but found himself robbed of possession in the centre circle and Holland swept forward, Nash completing the move by arrowing a shot across the face and inside the far post. "I was always confident Lee would score; he's a great lad and he doesn't get flustered in that sort of situation. He's deceptively clever," Davis said.

Nice was drawn into a fine low save minutes before the interval from Martin's strong effort, and he was fortunate soon after the break when Martin nodded Frankie Parish's corner wide of the left-hand upright, but for much of the closing half-an-hour it was St. Mary's who carved out the better opportunities.

They were aided by the dismissal of Holland midfielder Shaun Hanney for committing two cautionable offences on 68 minutes with Gordon Wilson immediately seeing a shot blocked out for a corner. Alex Creasy's trickery on the left-wing later led to Wilson having another effort thwarted, before substitute Matt Elderton smashed the rebound over.

With just five minutes remaining, Glenn Jones latched onto a looping through ball, only to slash wide and Ball did brilliantly to push Wilson's flicked header over from point-blank range. As St. Mary's continued to burst forward, even sending gloveman Nice up for some late set-pieces, Holland almost grabbed a second when Simon Walker diverted Martin's whipped cross over his own crossbar during six minutes of stoppage time.

"I'm over the moon. I'm really pleased for Warren Taylor, as it's likely to be his last season with us, and Wayne Morris, who is a really important player. We were covered on the bench, but your gameplay does change when someone goes off so early," Davis suggested. "We were thinking 'Here we go again' after the sending off, but we still had faith, especially after the semi-final. I'm pleased for the supporters, who were fantastic, and the chairman, who has done a really professional job with the club. It's just a shame that there weren't more people there to see it as this is such a great competition to be involved in."
