Ensign, leaders of the Olympian League, had led Brentwood, from the Essex & Herts Combination, 2-0 before Town were awarded two late penalties. The first was converted by Matt Maher before the same player squandered his chance to level, firing a second spot-kick over the crossbar.

"We had our hearts in our mouths for a bit!" said Ensign boss Stroyan Nelson after the final whistle. "It was a good game, though, and I thought we started really well and both our goals were really well taken. Mike Shelley's finish for the second was fantastic and we're really pleased about it."

Nelson knows his side didn't have it easy throughout, however: "Brentwood are a very good, young side. They really came at us in the last twenty minutes and their strikers caused us a fair few problems. Our defenders know they've been in a game!"

It was Ensign who created the early running and, in the opening minute, Welcome Mtshali's dangerous cross was just missed by the on-rushing Mike Shelley at the far post. But Ensign grabbed the lead on 10 minutes, another teasing Mtshali delivery confidently headed home by Ricky Thompson from eight yards.

Only a fine stop by Ensign 'keeper Nick Keys kept their lead intact at half-time, though, the young custodian sprinting off his line to deny Maher who had been played clean through by Steven Carroll.

Ten minutes into the second period, Ensign doubled their advantage, Shelley brilliantly winning the ball thirty yards from goal before completing a fine run with a thumping fifteen-yard finish into the top corner.

Ensign's second goal triggered Brentwood into action and, within minutes, Keys made another fine stop to push away Tirion Sherbourne's header and then blocked another Sherbourne effort before the Town forward stabbed the loose ball off-target.

Brentwood were thrown a lifeline in the 78th minute when they were awarded a penalty for a trip on Alfie Hayes and Maher confidently sent Keys the wrong way from the spot. Just two minutes later Keys brought down Hayes himself and referee Rob Whitton handed Town another penalty and a chance to equalise, but Maher this time smashed the ball over the top.

That wasn't the end of the story for Brentwood when, in the third minute of stoppage time, substitute Tony Russ' poked shot bounced off the post and into the hands of a grateful Keys before the Ensign custodian did well to cling onto Danny Aggio's fierce volley some six minutes into added-on time.

"We were pleased to get to our first Premier Cup Final and even happier to have won it," continued Nelson afterwards. "It's a trophy that'll look great in our cabinet!"
