Five-Goal Thriller as Thorpe Athletic Lift Junior Cup!
Thorpe Athletic’s record marksman, James Webb, was twice their goalscoring hero as they dramatically won the Essex Saturday Junior Cup Final, 3-2 after extra time, against Fairlop Rovers at Heybridge Swifts FC’s Scraley Road home.
His injury time penalty equaliser forced an additional 30 minutes as Athletic fought back from a goal down twice, then he scored in extra time to help his side claim the silverware. Jayden Francis had given Fairlop a 16th-minute advantage which Luke Barnard cancelled out in the 37th minute before the prolific Dylan Scutt netted a second for Fairlop on 54 minutes.
There was early action for Thorpe goalkeeper Grant Burnby in the 6th minute as he was forced to cling onto an effort from Ben Harris following a well-worked move. But Fairlop did move in front ten minutes later when Francis advanced forward and rifled in via the foot of the right-hand post. Thorpe equalised on 37 minutes, a through ball finding Luke Barnard, who added to his six goals in the competition with a fine, low drive. The scores remained deadlocked at the interval.
Rovers re-gained their advantage nine minutes into the second half. Scutt picked the ball up on the edge of the box and finished inside the left-hand post following a winding run. Harris curled a 63rd-minute effort inches wide of the upright as his side aimed to press home their advantage, and Jean-Pierre Alexander also saw his lob bounce inches over the top in the final minute.
Those misses proved costly nine minutes into injury time as Thorpe levelled again. After a handball in the box, Webb converted from the penalty spot to force extra time. Athletic went close on 101 minutes, the ball hitting the crossbar in the midst of a goalmouth scramble before being cleared off the goal line. But they did find a 110th-minute winner as a low ball across the area was converted at the far post by Webb again to win the cup.
