Some of the winners display their awards at Waterfront Place in Chelmsford

VOLUNTEERS RECOGNISED AT AWARDS EVENING

Some of County football's most dedicated local volunteers were rewarded for their efforts at a glitzy Awards Evening staged by the Essex County Football Association at Waterfront Place in Chelmsford recently.

Coaches, administrators, organisers and referees were amongst those receiving awards for achievements such as Long Service, Outstanding Services, Groundsman of the Year and League and Club Website of the year at the annual awards. This was preceded by a comprehensive update from County Development Manager, Nick Perchard, who summarised what those involved in the game could celebrate from the past twelve months.

Amongst those accepting their trophies was local referee George Lewis, who was thrilled to be recognised for around five decades of devotion to officiating. "I've enjoyed every minute of my time working the pitches of Essex and also involving myself with the Basildon Referees' Society. But it was a pleasant surprise to be informed I was nominated for such a prestigious award, I'm delighted," he explained.

Essex County F.A. Chairman, Michael Game, was active in handing over some of the trophies and shields and he was in no doubt as to the important role volunteers play in grassroots football, commenting: "No league, club or organisation at this level can function without people giving their time for the cause. Both major achievers and long-standing devotees were recognised on the night for work which is often taken for granted. These people enable others to enjoy the best sport there is."

Liz Thrift accepted the League Website of the Year Award on behalf of the Chelmsford & District Sunday Social League while Lawford Junior received the Club equivalent. Leytonstone United's team of dedicated helpers enjoyed collecting eight individual awards for Long Service. George Thorp was amongst those flying the flag for the North-West of the County, picking up recognition for his many years on the Committee of one of Essex's most successful junior status clubs, Potter Street F.C., from Harlow.

Of the club awards, several claimed their Charter Standard at the Waterfront, the mark of achievement for organisation and structure behind the scenes, and Billericay Town Colts and Chelmsford City Youth were represented by Richard Hollis and Gordon Williams respectively.

Focus Ferrers' Mo Allsop received a Regional Coach Award while Dave White picked up Hambro Colts' Regional Development Club prize from Sir Trevor Brooking at the half time break between England and Moldova's U21s European Qualifier which featured Theo Walcott, Nigel Reo-Coker and Anton Ferdinand in action at the home of Ipswich Town.

Hambro Colts Coaching Development Officer, Bob Pointer, commented: "It's the second time that we've won a Regional Club award as we were chosen in 2001/02 when we first held Charter Standard status.

"The FA believe that we're the first club to win this award at two different levels so we're really pleased."

The Rayleigh based club are also bringing football to all areas of their local community as Bob explained: "Dave White is relatively new to the club and he's a coach on our Soccability programme which means he'll be forming links and running sessions with local special schools."
Hambro Colts' Charter Standard status meant the club could also take advantage of The FA's discounted ticket offer: "We had 35 children at the game and everyone had a fantastic time wearing their England kits and cheering on Theo Walcott," said Bob.

Focus Ferrers' Michaela Goss explained more about Mo Allsop's influence at the club: "Everyone's really happy for Mo because he's a fantastic coach and has such a wonderful way with the children. He's got a very calm nature and does so much for the club, on and off the pitch."
