DENGIE PRIMARY CENTRAL VENUE

LEAGUE PROGRESSES

Meeting Number Three of the Umbro Dengie Primary Schools Central Venue League took place on Wednesday 27th February, with a record seven teams also entering the coinciding girls '4 v 4', the most since the event began back in October.

The Dengie League was set-up in partnership with Essex Local Education Authority Competition Manager Alison Gurner, Burnham Ramblers Junior F.C. and the Essex County F.A. to provide children from ten local primary schools with the opportunity to play regular, competitive fixtures at a 'central venue' rather than travelling for individual fixtures on separate occasions.

In the mini-soccer event on this occasion, Southminster won their second meeting to date while St. Nicholas' notched the Fair Play Shield, meaning the former top the overall table closely followed by Burnham County Primary. With the extra teams involved over the two competitions on this occasion, extra 'Young Leaders' from St. Peter's School, students from the Year Eight to Sixth Form age ranges with ambitions in sport, ensured proceedings ran smoothly and proved excellent role models to the primary school children.

The 7-a-Side competition consisted of mixed teams of students from School Years Five and Six challenging for a shield at the finale, gaining points for each win. An overall winner will be named at the end of the fifth meeting, however this format allows a different school to win the shield on each date and therefore adds to the excitement for the children.

To promote the game's codes of conduct, 'Fair Play Cards' were handed out during the matches by the Young Leaders who acted as referees for the event. The League Table for the day, plus the Fair Play and overall standings, are as follows:

UMBRO Dengie Primary Schools League

Burnham-on-Crouch’s local primary schools experienced the second meeting of the successful Umbro Dengie Central Venue League recently, with Purleigh coming-out on top on the day and Southminster leading overall.

The innovative League has been set-up in partnership with the Essex Local Education Authority Competition Manager Alison Gurner, Burnham Ramblers Junior F.C. and the Essex County F.A. to provide children from ten local primary schools with the opportunity to play regular, competitive fixtures at a ‘central venue’ rather than travelling for individual fixtures on separate occasions.

Sports goods suppliers Umbro are fully behind the initiative, showing their support by donating a free Equipment Pack to each participating school, and the William de Ferrers School Sport Partnership, specifically St. Peter’s High School in Burnham-on-Crouch, are also heavily involved. The contest is due to run over five dates from October to June.

The 7-a-Side competition consists of mixed teams of students from School Years Five and Six challenging for a shield at the finale, gaining points for each win. An overall winner will be named at the end of the fifth meeting, however this format allows a different school to win the shield on each date and therefore adds to the excitement for the children.

To promote the game’s codes of conduct, ‘Fair Play Cards’ are handed out during the matches by five ‘Young Leaders’ who act as referees for the event whilst also completing their F.A. Junior Football Organiser qualifications.

As the table below shows, Purleigh were the winners of the latest round of fixtures played on 14th November, with Burnham County Primary closely following in the runners-up spot for the second meeting running. Burnham did, however, scoop the award of Fair Play Winners.
