Referees Association and Societies

The Essex County Referees Association is affiliated to the national body of The Referees Association through the eight societies/branches in the county.

The main aims of the association are to:

* encourage all registered referees to become members
* improve the status and standard of referees
* protect members from injustice and unfair treatment whilst refereeing
* assist and take action, legal or otherwise, on behalf of any member who has been unfairly treated
* promote the interests of referees in general

Each society/branch holds a monthly meeting during the season. At these meetings you will gain the experience and advice from Premier League and senior referees, with the opportunity to discuss any problems which may have arisen during your matches. In-service training sessions led by FA-registered tutors are also held in order to improve and update your knowledge of the laws of the game and to help you progress to a higher level.

The average annual membership fee to join the association varies from £25-30, with a reduced fee for those under 18 years of age. This includes membership of the national Referees Association, the Essex County Referees Association, the local society/branch and personal accident insurance whilst officiating, travelling to a match, attending meetings and loss of kit or personal clothing.

All referees joining their local referees society/branch for the first time will have free membership of the Referees Association during their first season of membership and will only have to pay the insurance premium of £4 in order to be registered as members. In some cases, this premium is paid by the local referees branch once you have attended their meetings.

The Football Association and the Essex County FA strongly recommend that, if you wish to progress in your refereeing, it is essential that you become a member of the Referees Association. Further details of the benefits of being a member can be obtained from the RA website at or from the secretary of your local referees society/branch as shown below.
