Changes Made to Basic Referee's Course

The Football Association has implemented changes to the Basic Referee Course for season 2007/08 in a bid to retain candidates who take the course but don't advance to covering matches.

With 78% of those attending the Course not then becoming active referees, often taking it as part of another qualification or for knowledge of the Laws of the Game only, a lot of time and expense is wasted. Therefore, these prospective match officials could still achieve their personal targets by attending one or more of the new 'fit for purpose' training sessions which will be arranged by the Essex County F.A. as and when required.

Efforts are also being made to collate feedback on the existing course structure with the F.A. issuing a Referee Training Courses Questionnaire. Furthermore, the E.C.F.A. have compiled a summary of the training they are prepared to arrange, which should assist budding referees to select the type of training they want. Both these can be viewed or downloaded from the links below.

The Basic Referee Course will now include areas on Pre-Course Study, F.A. Criminal Records Bureau (C.R.B.) Disclosure (for those aged eighteen and over), Safeguarding Children Training (during the course), an Assessment of Knowledge Paper as well as instruction on the Laws of the Game, how to manage situations as a referee and written and theory exams.

Having passed the exams, candidates will then be registered as Level 9 Trainee Referees and, once they have refereed six eleven-a-side games and attended a New Referee Workshop, they will become fully-qualified referees and be promoted to Level 8 or Level 7, depending on age.

For more information on any of these training aspects, please contact the E.C.F.A.'s Referee Development Officer, Terry Thacker, on (01245) 393086. Terry will be happy to discuss the best course to suit your needs.
