To celebrate the 125th anniversary of
the Essex County Football Association's existence this
season, an appeal has been made for the football public
to sort through their archive of photos and memorabilia
to revive the glory of previous decades on the covers of
the next County Handbook and Magazine.
Special plans are afoot for commemorative editions of
these publications to be produced and E.C.F.A. Press
& Publicity Officer, Chris Evans, is on the hunt for
historical snaps to create special covers to mark the
Association's birth in 1882: "We know there are
plenty of fantastic artefacts and photos out there in
people's lofts and at the back of cupboards so we'd like
the opportunity to feature some of the best items in the
forthcoming 2007/08 Handbook and the Winter edition of
the E.C.F.A. Magazine."
Around the turn of the twentieth century, under the
guidance of Honorary Secretary and Treasurer
Robert Cook, there was no County Office, there were just
118 clubs and 112 referees, less than a tenth of today's
existence on the pitches of Essex. "There was
football evident in every major town or village in the
early 1900s and many of the clubs we have today will
have derived from those teams somewhere along the line.
We are keen to trace as many items from as far back as
possible and will obviously co-operate fully in getting
these returned safely to their owners," Evans
continued.
The County F.A. will soon be unveiling a brand-new logo
to mark the landmark season, which Chief Executive, Phil
Sammons, feels is worthy of great celebration:
"While we currently look to increase the number of
volunteers in the game it's also important to recognise
the efforts of those who got us this far. In this
special year the help of anyone who can lend us their
precious memories will be much appreciated."
