Level 4 Supply League nominees will now be entered into the ‘Essex Spartan Pool’ covering Essex Senior and Spartan South Midlands League games as referees, and they can also assist on Ryman Isthmian League games. Level 5 Senior County Referees are able to officiate on Step 7 League Premier Divisions (i.e. Essex & Suffolk Border, ProKit UK Essex Olympian).

Meanwhile, Level 6 County Referees step up to leagues’ Senior Divisions, such as the Essex & Suffolk Border Divisions One and Two and the Olympian Premier plus the Senior Divisions One, Two and Three. Each of the match officials has been contacted by Essex County FA Referee Development Officer, James Lisher, to personally inform them of their promotions to their respective new levels.

James is keen for more referees to consider promotion: “On behalf of the Essex County FA I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all of the leagues who have provided us with support in developing our match officials. The opportunity to officiate within the senior levels of the game has never been better thanks to the development schemes we have in place alongside the support available from our Referee Development Team and referee workforce.”

He also described the “forefront of change” which local refereeing is experiencing: “More and more of our officials are applying and showing that they have the ability to officiate at a higher level. Once you get the bug… you can’t stop! Football is consistently developing, so the way we train and assess our match officials has to adapt to these environments.”

“We’ve already seen a major change in the way we recruit new trainee referees with the release of our practical referees course. Now we’ve put in place a practical development programme in preparation for next season, which will provide our match officials with an opportunity, regardless of level, to receive additional training through development days.”

The Promotions Panel consists of current and former referees, working with information gathered by Referee Assessors. Support during the process has also come from Essex’s dedicated FA Tutor Team, Referee Development Team and Youth Council. Details relating to candidates selected for the 2016/17 promotion scheme will be confirmed shortly.
