FOUNDATION SEEKS TO
ERADICATE OLD GOALPOSTS |

Extra funding is being made available by the
Football Foundation in a bid to finally make ageing and rusty goalposts a
thing of the past, announcing their nationwide plans to increase
investment in new equipment and ensure the safety of all participants.
Up to £3,000 per application is now up for grabs according to a recent
set of Foundation Guidance Notes which aim to maximise the impact of the
Goalpost Safety Scheme and meet the demands of groups wishing to deliver
grassroots football safely. With immediate effect, new goalposts and
replacement posts are both covered under the grant's terms and an extended
range of goals are now available.
E.C.F.A. County Development Manager, Nick Perchard, has welcomed the
changes, explaining: "Basically clubs can now apply for new goalposts
even if they haven't already got existing ones. As well as the more
traditional full-size, youth and mini-soccer posts, some of the newer sets
have also become available, including Futsal goalposts and the 9 v 9 ones
which our local Chelmer & Crouch Youth League have been one of the
first to pilot."
With examples of injuries or even death being caused by faulty equipment
in Essex and the rest of the nation, specific areas have been targeted for
investment, including goals made before 1996 when official British
Standards were put in place. Those with metal 'cup hooks', wooden or
free-standing posts, mini-soccer versions with parts missing and rusty
goalposts will also be removed as part of the drive.
Clair Robinson, of the Football Foundation, commented: "We expect the
initial increase in application levels to be significant and we are
working towards an online system that will speed-up our workflow and the
rate at which we can deal with these. The changes the Trustees have
approved are positive for the scheme and grassroots football as a
whole."
Applications are welcomed from F.A. affiliated clubs, local authorities
and schools although retrospective bids or those from professional clubs and their
academies will not be considered. Further information on how to apply,
along with appropriate flyers, can be found at www.footballfoundation.org.uk.
