TESCO SKILLS COACH PROGRAMME
|
|
|
|
|
|
Essex is benefiting from
the commencement of an exciting new F.A. Tesco Skills
Coach Programme aimed at raising the technical standards
of football amongst 5-11 year olds, led by ex-Tottenham
Hotspur Youth coach Matthew Joseph.

|
|
|
|
|
The F.A. Director of Football
Development, Sir Trevor Brooking and his team at The F.A.
are running a programme giving local children from Essex
qualified football skills coaching. The Programme is a
three-year initiative co-ordinated by The F.A. and
funded by Tesco and the National Sports Foundation,
aiming to give one million children in England
top-quality guidance by the summer of 2010. |
|
|
|
|
|
Throughout England, a total of
66 full-time, specialist Skills Coaches will focus on
improving techniques amongst their target age group,
when ball skills are ingrained, throughout twelve
counties in England. Essex are one of the lucky
locations to become involved and their coaches, who
include ex-Tottenham Hotspur Youth coach Matthew Joseph
and ex-Bristol Rovers player Luke Williams, are all
fully qualified F.A. coaches having just completed an
age-appropriate skills coaching course.
The Skills Coaches will deliver F.A. Skills Centres in
the local area, where they will be training boys and
girls using world-leading coaching techniques, so that
young players can be inspired to get active and maximise
their football skills, whatever their ability.
For coaching videos, football tips and fun games, 5-11
year olds can sign-up at www.TheFA.com/Skills
and parents, teachers and local football clubs can also
help children progress by supporting them through
specially designed football Skills Challenges which are
available on the site.
The official launch of the Essex portion of the
Programme took place at Hare Street Primary School in
Harlow. Sir Trevor observed as 450 children took part in
a fun session and commented: "At the elite end of
the game, there is concern over the skill gap between
English youngsters and their European counterparts,
which has an obvious impact on our future success as a
football nation."
"At grassroots level, the Skills Programme will
enable us to begin the challenge of raising the
technical bar in English football at the key 5-11
year-old developmental stage. It is also about providing
specialist, quality coaching to give young players an
enjoyable, stimulating environment to maximise their
ability.
Tesco already runs a voucher collection scheme 'Sport
for Schools and Clubs' where they have given £20m of
sports equipment to schools and this agreement takes
their commitment to sport and healthy living forward.
Details of future Skills Centres will appear on this
page in due course. |
