COLCHESTER E.ON NATIONAL SCHOOLS DAY FESTIVAL

Innovative new ways of rewarding achievement were put into practice at  the Colchester-based E.ON National Schools Day Festival recently, with Tendring's Great Bentley Primary School coming-up trumps in the 4 v 4 competition thanks to their impeccable Fair Play perspective.

At the Essex branch of a nationwide day of football to celebrate the progress the schools game across the Country, Shrub End Community Sports Centre played host to the second annual Festival for Primary Schools held in association with F.A. Cup sponsors. The event featured seventeen teams, with separate 4 v 4 festivals for both Year Three and Four girls and boys.

Rain and menacing black clouds loomed overhead but they didn't dampen the spirits of over one hundred children who attended from schools across the length and breadth of the County. The overall event winners were decided by Fair Play Points rather than results and Great Bentley finished top in the girls section, while Howbridge from Witham claimed top spot in the boys' category.

Adam Bloor, a teacher from Great Bentley, commented: "the children had a great time, even though the weather was horrible! I think the day has really inspired some of our girls to continue playing."

Colchester Villa Y.F.C. were also on-hand during the proceedings to test the children's shooting skills with their Target Shot game, the highest-scoring boy and girl both collecting a prize.

Essex County F.A. Education & Schools Football Development Officer, Lana Bond, explained: "We changed the format of the festival to 4 v 4 this year with the aim of giving the children more touches of the ball and the opportunity to express themselves. It was great to see them taking to the smaller-sided matches so quickly and, as their confidence grew, lots of little tricks and moves began to show through in the mini games."
