E.ON
BRINGS FOOTBALL FOR ALL TO HARLOW
|
|
|
|
|
|
E.ON's sponsorship of The
Football Association's Schools Programme was heralded
recently as disabled players were provided with the
opportunity to play small-sided games and also receive
expert coaching from Essex's F.A. Tesco Skills Team. |

Mark Hall Sports Centre's
excellent facilities in Harlow played host to this
year's festival as boys and girls from special schools
across Essex celebrated the E.ON sponsorship of the
schools programme by receiving expert coaching as well
as having the chance to record their own 'personal
bests' in the F.A. Skills Challenges.
Over fifty children aged between eight and sixteen from
The Heath, St. Christopher's, Cedar Hall, Chelmsford New
Model and Oakview Schools enjoyed a fun-filled day of
football, including 4 v 4 matches in which the players
demonstrated some of the tricks they had picked-up
earlier in the day from the E.C.F.A. Coaching Team and
Skills Coaches. |

The theme of the day was fun
and enjoyment and every player went away happy after
receiving their E.ON goody bags, medals, t-shirts and
Certificates of Achievement. Following the success of
this event, the Essex Competition Management Team will
be running a follow-up Football Day in partnership with
the Tottenham Hotspur Foundation and the F.A. Skills
Team at The Deanes Specialist Sports College.
Wayne Curtis, of recently-crowned F.A. Charter Standard
Special School of the Year, St. Christopher's, was
delighted with the triumph of the day: "We took a
variety of primary and secondary school children along
and they enjoyed the different styles of the game that
they'd never tried before, although some of them found
it difficult to comprehend the lack of a goalkeeper
during the games! We certainly plan to increase our
involvement next year, perhaps by taking a few more
girls to the event." |

CHARTER
STANDARD CLUB AND SCHOOL AWARDS 2008 |
|
|
|
|
|
Benchmark football clubs and schools
across the County will be recognised this Spring with
the collection of nominations for the prestigious
Charter Standard Club and School Awards 2008 now
underway at the Essex County F.A. |

at county level, then could lead to regional and national
equivalents.
|
|
|
|
|
The F.A. Charter Standard Programme was designed in 2001 with
the promise of improving grassroots football and aiming to make
a difference in local communities around the country. Seven
years later, the E.C.F.A. are one of the county leaders, with
well over one hundred clubs signed-up and enjoying the benefits
the status brings.
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
Every year the E.C.F.A. take that
recognition one step further by rewarding clubs, schools
and individuals who have made a special impact on the
game and they are now hoping a large number of names
will be put forward for the Awards, due to be presented
later this year. Brendan Walshe, Senior Football
Development Officer at the E.C.F.A. with the task of
overseeing the Charter Standard Club programme, said:
"We want to recognise the clubs and specific
individuals within these clubs who work tirelessly and
go the extra mile with the utmost commitment to ensure
players are able to participate in football in the best
environments."
There will be two areas of the Awards - Clubs and
Schools. Winners of the County's Club Awards will
receive a Pennant and victors in the regional equivalent
will collect a plaque and a £100 Umbro voucher. The
categories for the club awards are: Charter Standard
Club, Adult Club, Development Club, Community Club, Club
Coach and Club Administrator.
Meanwhile, Schools can nominate themselves in the
following categories: Primary or Primary Development,
Secondary or Secondary Development, Special School or
Specialist Sports Colleges who have Charter Standard or
Development status. This year's winners will also
receive a Pennant and Umbro Equipment Pack and will be
invited to attend the prestigious E.C.F.A. Awards
Evening in the summer. All County winners will be
automatically nominated to represent Essex in the
regional awards and, if successful, the nationals.
Lana Bond, E.C.F.A. Education & Schools Development
Officer, is hoping for a decent response from schools in
the County, adding: "These Awards were successful
last year and we had one regional champion from Essex.
Their main purpose is to recognise and reward schools
who are constantly striving to deliver high standards of
football provision for their pupils."
"There are a number of features of Charter Standard
School status, including F.A. recognition of the
school's commitment to raising standards of football for
all pupils regardless of ability. Schools can also gain
free Football equipment, England Youth and Women's
International Tickets, access to Football Foundation
grants and reduced prices on coach education courses as
well as plenty of other benefits."
The deadline for nominations towards the 'Club' version
is the 27th April, to be forwarded to Brendan Walshe at:
E.C.F.A. The County Office, Springfield Lyons Approach,
Chelmsford, Essex, CM2 5LB. Winners at county level will
be announced at the end of May and at regional level at
the end of July. Nominations for the 'Schools' Awards
need be returned to Lana Bond at the same address but by
2nd May to be considered. Nomination Forms can be
downloaded
HERE or Brendan can be contacted on (01245) 393075
and Lana on (01245) 393073.

IN-SERVICE TRAINING SCHEME
|
|
|
|
|
|
With the number of F.A.
Charter Standard Secondary Schools in the County
constantly growing, Essex County F.A. are offering the
opportunity to access an in-service training session to
recognise and reward their commitment to raising
standards in the game.
There will be three general areas from which you, the
Schools, can choose one session from to be delivered to
your school students or young leaders and staff, and
these can be adapted to your specific needs. The
sessions will be delivered by Andy Edmunds, E.C.F.A.
Community Sports Coach or Gary Piggott, E.C.F.A.
Coaching Development Officer, and will last between 1-2
hours (based on individual school needs).
C.P.D. Session 1 - Futsal
Ever wondered how some of the world's most skilful
players developed their ability to beat opponents at
will? How do players like Ronaldinho and Robinho develop
skills to set them apart from other players?
If you are interested in finding out how your students
can play the Brazilian way you need to find out about
Futsal. A taster of this fast-flowing game, played to
touchlines which promotes fair play, is increasingly in
popularity amongst schools. It's a great way to develop
players' skills, techniques and to promote creativity
and imagination.
Check out Futsal in action at
www.thefa.com/GrassrootsNew/Player/Postings/2006/05/Futsal.
C.P.D. Session 2 - Gifted & Talented
Got an important school fixture? Need a reward for a
school team (male or female)? Or just need some more
ideas to help develop your talented players? This
session can be structured specifically for your players'
needs, which can focus on skills, techniques or team
play in match situations.
C.P.D. Session 3 - Coaches of the Future
Are you running a J.S.L.A., C.S.L.A. or F.A. Junior
Football Organiser course for your students? Would you
like some extra support to enthuse your young leaders to
become more active in volunteering and put their
coaching or officiating skills into practice?
This session will give your young leaders an update on
the current coaching ethos including Long-Term Player
Development, the Four Corners of Learning and
fundamentals and movement in football. There would also
be the opportunity to find out about the coaching
pathways available and future career opportunities in
coaching and football development. |

COUNTY
AND SHRIMPERS LAND INNOVATION AWARD
|
|
|
|
|
|
Essex County F.A. and the
Extra Time @ S.U.F.C. Study Support Centre were
celebrating recently after scooping The Football
Association's National Innovation Award for 2007 for its
3 Lions F.C. Learning Centre. |
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
The centre beat-off stiff
competition to win the 'Education through Football'
category at a recent awards ceremony in London. Over the
last two summers, the E.C.F.A. have worked with the
centre, based at Southend United F.C.'s Roots Hall
stadium in partnership with Extra Time and The F.A., to
deliver England football-themed activities to targeted
groups of 10-12 year olds using The F.A.'s '3 Lions'
brand.
Week-long schemes invited pupils selected by their
schools because they have little or no interest in
football or because the school felt they would benefit
from confidence-building activities to participate in a
range of fun classroom-based and physical activities. As
much as possible, children accessed the resources in and
around the stadium as well as taking part in activities
in the Centre's state-of-the-art I.C.T. suite and
neighbouring Priory Park, enabling the children that
attended to brush-up on their literacy, numeracy and
computer skills.
E.C.F.A. Education and Schools Officer, Lana Bond,
commented: "It's extremely satisfying to see The 3
Lions F.C. Centre gaining national recognition. This is
a real reflection of the hard work and dedication that
has gone into planning the scheme and ensuring that,
above all, the children involved have taken a lot from
being part of such an innovative learning
experience." |
|
|
|
|
|
 |
|
|
|
|
|
Pupils attending the project
over the last two summers have benefited from
high-profile visitors and role-models. England Women's
players Faye White and Mary Phillip have both spent a
day with pupils as has Sir Trevor Brooking and the
Southend United Manager Steve Tilson and goalkeeper
Steve Collis.
The Study Support Centre is a partnership between
Southend Borough Council, Southend United F.C. and the
Department for Children, Schools and Families.
Simon Bell hoped the award would mean the scheme could
be extended next year. "Like all these
things", he said, "we only received limited
funding in the first place. Hopefully, we can secure
future funding so we can build upon our initial success
and ensure the project can continue to go from strength
to strength."

Support Centre can be found at their Website, www.extratimesufc.org.uk |

EPCP Spurs is a team for
players with ambulant cerebral palsy and is drawn from
East and North London as well as neighbouring counties.
Having been set-up by Emerson Park School three years
ago, a partnership has since been linked with Tottenham
Hotspur Foundation. Led by Ian Walter, the team were
given the fantastic opportunity to show their skills in
front of a 40,000 Wembley crowd at half-time during the
thrilling clash between Exeter City and Morecambe.
“It was a fantastic experience for the lads and a
great advert for Celebral Palsy football” revealed
Walter. “Being in front of such audience is a great
way of marketing CP football. There may well have been
some people there who would like to get into it but
didn’t know it existed.”
Naturally, just getting to step onto the lush turf of
the new National Stadium was a great experience for the
side, and Walter agrees: “It was certainly an
experience and the whole day was great! We changed in
one of the dressing rooms and had great seats right by
the halfway line below the Royal Box. The boys really
enjoyed it.”
There was one EPCP Spurs player missing from the Wembley
trip with Kwame Osei representing the England CP Squad
at the Dutch International Tournament in Zeist, Holland
between 17 and 22 May.
The Club are keen to recruit members from age 6 and
upwards. More details are available on their website www.epcpspurs.co.uk |

Held in association with FA
Cup sponsor, E.ON, the festival featured 13 schools with
separate 6-a-side tournaments for both Year Three and
Four girls and boys.
The overall event winners were decided by fair play
points rather than results and Hutton All Saints
(Brentwood) came top in the girls section while Lee
Chapel (Basildon) and Holt Farm (Rochford) shared top
prize in the boys category. |

Hutton All Saints were the

and PE Coordinator, Deb Rosser, was pleased to see the
younger children get an opportunity to play some
football: "They've all been looking forward to the
festival so much and it's great to see everyone having
such a good time and enjoying a fun football day.
"This year has seen the first season of the
Brentwood Girls League which is aimed at Years Five and
Six so today was a great chance for the younger children
to play on a Third Generation pitch and against other
schools from around Essex," said Deb whose after
school football coaching clubs at Hutton feature 25
girls on a regular basis. |

Clacton's Holland Park were

"Football has always been popular at Holland Park
and it's a nice opportunity for our Year Four boys as
they're not regulars in the school team at the moment.
"This is my first experience of an Essex FA event
and I'm very impressed. It's been very well organised
and hopefully we can be involved in future events as
well."
Over £30 was raised for cancer charity, Kick for CLIC,
with the children paying 50p each to enter a skills
competition and there was also an inflatable Speed Shot
station which saw both the boy and girls teams from
Leverton (Waltham Abbey) record the most powerful shots
of the day. |

many schools from around the county as all four corners
of Essex were represented.
"This season's FA Cup Final between Manchester
United and Chelsea is bound to be an exciting occasion
at new Wembley Stadium and I'm delighted that so many

The day saw schools from all
over the country celebrate the world's oldest club cup
competition and the Essex County FA event featured Year
Seven teams from Canon Palmer, Robert Clack,
Shoeburyness, Eastlea, Eastwood, Royal Docks, King
Harold and Mark Hall.
Redbridge College also hold Charter Standard status and
young coaches from their successful football scholarship
scheme helped run the skill stations and indoor Futsal
tournament.
Level One coach, Geneian Marqeshi, was delighted to be
involved: "I love football coaching and I can't
wait to go out and start working with local clubs.
Everyone's had a lot of fun today and I think the kids
have really enjoyed the Futsal competition because
they've all got a chance to play and touch the ball
which isn't always the case with 11-a-side," said
the 18 year old who is hoping to sign up for a Level Two
course soon. |

The skill stations featured a
range of different drills plus a speed shot inflatable
which gave MPH readings from twelve yards.
Mark Hall PE Co-ordinator, Simon Bolden, was impressed
with the range of different activities on offer:
"We've really enjoyed the skills and drills and the
Redbridge coaches have been fantastic as well. The kids
have given them great respect and picked up a few new
skills as well which is excellent."
The Harlow based school have a successful Year Seven
11-a-side football team but Simon is also a big Futsal
fan: "It's quite new to us but it's a great game
because everyone gets involved regardless of size. The
smaller players don't have to worry about big tackles
and they can concentrate on improving their technique as
well." |

Shoeburyness travelled to the
event from Southend and the area's School Partnership
Development Manager, Kirk Edwards, believes more schools
should work towards Charter Standard: "It's very
beneficial because the scheme generates great pathways
for children of any age to get involved with clubs in
the local area.
"All the Shoeburyness players here today play for
local youth football clubs on Sundays and this is
probably their first experience of playing at an
organised event with different schools from around the
county.
"I'm always impressed with Essex County FA events
and this is another fun initiative for children to take
part in."
Newham's Royal Docks picked up the event's Futsal trophy
with a 2-1 extra time win over Canon Palmer in the final
and ECFA Education Officer, Lana Bond, commented:
"Hopefully this is the start of many school Futsal
initiatives in the county. The children really took to
the game and there was a lot of fast, free flowing
football on show which made for a great
atmosphere." |

| Perry
Street's Kevan Sans, a former pupil at
Buttsbury, explained more: "The only
football at the school was in curriculum
time and their PE Co-ordinator, Meg
Hiscock, wanted to expand on this. |
| "A
letter was sent out at the end of last
year asking for interested parents to get
involved and run some coaching sessions so
I put my name forward along with some
other Perry Street coaches," said
Kevan who passed his Level One certificate
two years ago. |
| |
| The
school recently received a set of brand
new goal posts from the
English |
| Schools
FA and Kevan is delighted with Buttsbury's
football success so far: "We've
started up a girls team for Years Five and
Six and our aim is to get boys and girls
from all the year groups playing some kind
of football. |
|
|
|
|
|
|
"There's also an opportunity for them to join Perry
Street if they want to take their interest
further."
Perry Street were also instrumental in helping Buttsbury
achieve the FA Charter Standard award: "It's
definitely worth having as it shows parents that you're
doing the right things. No other school in Billericay
has the award either so it's great to be the
first," said Kevan.

Little Oakley are keen to ensure that girls have the
opportunity to access football within their local
community.
Harwich is a hot bed of talent for Girls Football with
five local girls playing at the Colchester Centre of
Excellence programme and Little Oakley coach, James
Martin, is delighted with the turnout: "Our club
already has around 120 youth and adult players and over
the last couple of seasons we have been able to add a
women's team to our family club.
"We are hoping to get U12 and U14 teams from the
success of this programme as the girls are really
enjoying the sessions and looking forward to playing in
games against other clubs within the North East of the
county."

Football fun at Burnham's
Three Lions FC project |
|
|
|
|
|
|
Burnham County Primary have teamed up with Charter
Standard outfit Burnham Ramblers to give local children
a chance to play football in curriculum time, at after
school hour clubs and on weekends as well.
Deputy Head at Burnham County Primary, Nicky Tothill, is
delighted with the success of the School Club Link:
"I'm a football fanatic so it's great for me to see
both boys and girls getting involved and playing the
game."
Nicky helps front the Three Lions FC project on Saturday
mornings having recently picked up her Level One
qualification along with a coach from Burnham Ramblers
U15s and two other staff members from Burnham County
Primary.
The Three Lions FC project has almost 30 boys and girls
attending on a regular basis and Nicky admits it was
difficult at first to get the girls playing with
confidence: "We have set up a girls only after
school club which runs every Tuesday and is supported by
the Essex FA's Community Coach, Andy Edmunds.
"There isn't a girls team at Burnham Ramblers so
we're looking to create opportunities for our U7s
through to U10s and get them involved with the club next
season."
ECFA Education & Schools Development Officer, Lana
Bond, added: "The project has been a real success
due to the drive and enthusiasm of both the school and
the club. The Three Lions FC project acts as a valuable
link for introducing football to children for the first
time and we hope that this will continue for seasons to
come."

Powers Hall recently formed their very own School Club
link with local youth football side, Valley Green, and
the regular football coaching sessions are certainly
proving popular as PE Coordinator, Sue Thornett,
explained: "Valley Green's Wayne Lowry comes in and
coaches Years Three and Four one week and Years Five and
Six the next during curriculum time.
"The children enjoy playing mixed football and our
after school club features up to 15 girls on a regular
basis so it's great to have that interest within the
school."
Sue is also looking forward to obtaining her own
football coaching qualifications in the near future:
"I've signed up for a Level One course which should
be really good. I have coached hockey in the past so I
can't wait to get involved in football as well."
The Ipswich Town fan was also a key player in obtaining
the school's Charter Standard award: "We've got
some really good programmes at the school so it's nice
to see our football provision officially recognised by
The FA."
Powers Hall's Charter Standard certificate means that
the school can now enter The FA's Charter Standard
Awards with a range of UMBRO equipment bags up for grabs
for County and Regional winners plus England tickets in
the National School category.

The Basildon based school only received their Charter
Standard certificate 18 months ago and PE Coordinator,
Paul Davis, is delighted with their progress: "It's
fantastic to win this award as Years Three through to
Six play football on a regular basis and we have all
sorts of Lunch and After School clubs for boys and
girls.
"We have 25 girls taking part in coaching sessions
and two or three are really showing promise so I'm
looking to get them playing mixed football next
year," said Paul whose school have a link with
local Charter Standard club, Vange United.
St Anne Line gained Charter Standard status in July 2005
after Paul made some initial enquiries regarding a new
school football strip: "We were given advice by our
local School Sports Partnership on how to approach the
Football Foundation for new kit and they told us more
about the Charter Standard and it soon became apparent
that our football provision exceeded the criteria so we
made sure that we applied for the certificate as soon as
possible."
The School's Regional Award prize from The FA included a
Charter Standard plaque for their foyer wall plus a big
bag of orange and yellow size three footballs.

The Hockley based school have a near 100% participation
rate amongst Year Six girls and extra coaches providing
after school clubs for boys.
The Charter Standard School Award is a sign of good
football practice within an educational environment and
Westerings' Martin Rayner explained more about their
programme: "Demand for football is very high in our
school. It's well supported by teachers and parents and
we've linked up with Rayleigh Raiders who come in and
help with the coaching sessions for girls."
The school have a whole programme of fixtures organised
by the South East Essex Primary Sports Association and
there are also plans to work with coaches from their
Championship football club neighbours.
"Southend United are going to be running some
sessions for us and we also have a coach called Jason
McDermott who runs our Year Six coaching for boys plus
our Football for All club programme," said Martin.
With a School Club link set up with Rayleigh Raiders,
Martin is keen to develop partnerships with other local
sides: "We have an excellent relationship with
Rayleigh Raiders but I'm conscious of the fact that a
lot of our children don't play football on weekends.
"It might be because they can't get to training,
their parents are too busy to take them or the
opportunity just isn't there so we're hoping to link up
with other clubs in Hockley and the surrounding area and
get everyone playing on a regular basis."
