NEW VIC
COLLEGE HOSTS NEW GIRLS' TEAM |
|
|
|
|
|
A brand new Girls Under 15s
team has been created thanks to the successful climax of
Newham Sixth Form College's latest School-Club Link
initiative during the months of March and April.
Female Level Two coaches carried out 'Taster Sessions'
in two secondary schools which then advanced to a weekly
schedule held at the college. Up to fifteen girls
attended the sessions, which were also supported by the
E.C.F.A.'s female coaches as well as New Vic College's
Karen Daly. The weekly training sessions are set to
continue throughout the summer and it is hoped the team,
set to be called Daly Free Kicks F.C., will be able to
enter a local girls' league in the near future.
Sharon Brownlie, E.C.F.A. Girls' & Women's Football
Development Officer for the London Boroughs, is pleased
the area designated as a priority for an increase in
involvement is now beginning to bear fruit: "The
London Borough of Newham is an area which has reported
low participation rates for physical activity within
females so for this project to be such a success was a
pleasant surprise. The hard work within the schools, as
well as at the weekly sessions, have ensured local
females can be engaged in regular activity which is also
free of charge. We hope this continues to
flourish."
For further information on the work the E.C.F.A. is
doing in Newham, as well as advice on how to develop
girls' teams, can be obtained by contacting Sharon on
(01245) 393074 or via E-Mail at sharon.brownlie@essexfa.com. |

SNARESBROOK
GIRLS SCHOOL-CLUB LINK |
|
|
ENDS ON
A HIGH ! |
|
|
|
|
|
Girls' football in the
London Borough of Redbridge continues to go from
strength to strength this summer as the Essex County
F.A.'s eight-week School-Club Link programme came to an
end at Snaresbrook F.C.
The club, based in Wanstead, were assisted by the
E.C.F.A. in setting-up a girls section which included
in-school 'Taster Sessions' as well as a further eight
weeks of coaching support at the club's Nutter Lane
facility. The sessions were delivered by an all-female
team of coaches from the Tottenham Hotspur Foundation
who also helped with the first eight weeks of sessions
run at the club.
Tasters were delivered in four local schools and the
response at the club's Saturday training mornings was
extremely positive, with over twenty-five girls in
attendance. As a result of the bumper turnout,
Snaresbrook will be entering two new girls' teams into
the newly-formed Girls Under 10s Division of the Essex
County Girls' League, which is open to clubs based in
the London Boroughs of Havering, Newham, Barking &
Dagenham, Waltham Forest and Redbridge.
Reflecting on the accomplishment, E.C.F.A. Girls' &
Women's Football Development Officer for the London
Boroughs, Sharon Brownlie, explained: "In the short
time we have been delivering work within the Boroughs
this has by far been our most successful School-Club
Link. The delivery of the Taster Sessions received great
feedback and the fact that Snaresbrook are now able to
affiliate two new teams is a testament to the hard work
undertaken by the club and the female coaches who have
supported them."
Further information on how to get involved in the F.A.
School-Club Link Programme or how to develop a girls
section can be obtained from Sharon Brownlie on (01245)

BASILDON
BENEFITS FROM SCHOOL-TO-CLUB LINK |
| |
| Barstable School and C.K. Basildon
Girls F.C. are the latest institutions to benefit from the F.A.
School-to-Club Link Programme after their recent 'Girls Only' World
Cup-based Festival was enjoyed by nearly twenty young females. |
| |
| The influence of the England Women's
Team, who reached the last eight of the F.I.F.A. Women's World
Cup recently, was the inspiration behind the event, designed
to increase opportunities for girls football in Basildon. |
|
| |
| Charter Standard club C.K. Basildon
were proactive in the running of the event which saw nineteen
budding footballers brush aside the rain and participate in
the festivities. Taster sessions were previously run at local
schools by the E.C.F.A.'s Community Coach, Andy Edmunds,
during P.E. lessons. C.K. are known to be particularly
well-involved in their community and they were only too happy
to help progress the scheme. |
|
| |
| The taster sessions took place in ten
primary schools around the area and E.C.F.A. Girls & Women's
Development Officer, Emma Wake, was particularly thrilled with their
success: "We've done these sort of things before but this
programme stood out as one of the most popular as we've identified
Basildon as an area we need to work in. The club have been fantastic
and we are hoping to link-in with future programmes the local
authority are planning." |
| |
 |
| |
The School-to-Club Link Programme aims to
improve the exit routes available for youngsters to increase their
participation in the game through making football in their schools a
lifetime hobby, creating clear pathways for them to continue to
enjoy the national game outside of class hours.
Funding for eight sessions has been supplied by the E.C.F.A. with
the ultimate goal being the scheme becoming self-sustainable and
leading to a brand-new C.K. Basildon Under 11s team for next season.
Emma continued: "We have to thank the club who have been
brilliant with their organisation and coaching, especially Peter
King and Paul Clarke who have been driving forces, and also to the
female teachers at the schools who got involved and didn't just
stand back to watch. The event has been a massive triumph." |

WORLD CUP INSPIRES
LAWFORD GIRLS' FESTIVAL |
| |
| Almost one hundred girls aged from six
to sixteen took part in fun football skills and matches with a
Women's World Cup theme at Lawford Junior F.C. Club last Friday, to
celebrate the England campaign taking place in China this month. |
|
|
Lawford have been awarded more than £6,000
through a Local Network Fund grant and the cash injection, along
with support from the Essex County F.A. and Tendring Youth Sports
Development, means they can now welcome girls of all ages with
immediate effect.
Kate Everett, Development Officer at Lawford beamed: "We were
amazed at the response from the girls in our area, with more than
forty coming along to the festival. Even the very young girls stayed
focussed for the entire three hours and can't wait to come back and
start playing football at Lawford."
"The older girls were inspired by established teams and players
who attended from Essex and Suffolk and proved we have some real
local footballing talent. We are so pleased to finally be able to
offer facilities for these girls to be able to play football locally
and we were very proud to host such an incredible event."
"I would like to thank the Essex F.A., who have supported us in
driving this project forward, and who organised all the activities
on Friday. As a result, we have more than three times the number of
girls we expected signing-up to play here as they were so motivated
by the event."
Emma Wake, E.C.F.A. Girls' & Women's Football Development
Officer, added: "Friday night's festival was fantastic! The
number of girls who turned up to play was really positive and
demonstrates the need for local girls teams in this area. Lawford
Junior F.C. have worked really hard to ensure everything is in place
for a quality girls section to be established."
"Running the event as a cross-border festival, working in
partnership with Suffolk F.A., enabled us to welcome girls from all
the local villages and towns, regardless of what County they were
from. There is certainly potential to continue running specific
festivals or leagues in the North East of the County, so watch this
space!"
Girls' coaching starts at Lawford Junior F.C. this Saturday, 15th
September, from 11:00am to 12:30pm for girls aged between six and
sixteen. Contact Kate Everett on (01206) 397111 for further details

SCHOOL-TO-CLUB LINK LEADS
TO NEW YOUTH TEAM |
| |
| Beacon Hill Rovers Youth F.C. and
Great Totham Primary School are the latest two candidates to create
a bridge for potential young footballers using the fast-progressing
F.A. 3 Lions F.C. School-to-Club Link Programme. |
| |
 |
|
Beacon Hill
Rovers' home at Great Totham Road |
|
|
|
With the aim of the scheme is to allow
children to play football in curriculum time, in after school clubs
in addition to progressing towards weekends as well. Rovers and
their local school have been working together on the creation of a
brand new Under 7s team to participate in the Blackwater &
Dengie Youth & Mini-Soccer competition for the forthcoming
campaign.
The programme gives pupils the chance to play in a club environment
via taster sessions in schools which are followed by an eight-week
follow-up at the club, led by an F.A. Level Two Coach. Objectives of
the sessions include making the game fun and presenting awards for
participation after the eighth week, something which E.C.F.A.
Football Development Officer, Lana Bond, enjoyed completing
recently. "Following the success of a similar relationship at
Burnham, it's pleasing to give these players the opportunity to
learn and develop in a controlled and structured environment."
Peter Mickelson is a Coach at Beacon Hill, and also a Governor at
the Primary School so he was one of the driving forces behind the
link, explaining: "We were delighted twenty-four players
signed-up for the Programme despite the inclement weather. These
were decent numbers who enjoyed the varied activities, working on
their control, passing, shooting and goalkeeping. Not only were we
able to include several coaches, many female, but this further
builds on our community links and we have now increased our age
groups to assist in the growth of the club."

their School Club link partnership with local club, Contrast
Juniors |
 |
|
Geoff Smith and
Mawney's Three Lions Football Club |
|

who have no grass pitches of their own, receive regular Friday
afternoon coaching sessions from the Contrast coaches with
Years Three and Four all working on their basic skills. |
|
| |
Sessions take place in the school
hall or on the outside playground and Contrast's Geoff Smith
presented the school with their equipment last Friday.
Everyone involved in the afternoon football club also
received a Three Lions FC certificate of attendance and ECFA
Football Education Officer, Lana Bond, commented:
"The School Club link project sees Charter Standard clubs
working within local schools and it's great to see the boys and
girls at Mawney benefiting from Contrast Juniors' coaching
expertise.
"Despite having limited facilities,
Mawney have shown great dedication to providing football coaching

SKILLS & DRILLS
FOR DAVENANT |

warmed up in Epping thanks to Buckhurst Hill YFC's School Club Links
project at the Davenant Foundation School. |

the children on the School Club Link Project in Epping |
|
| |
| Primary School children from Theydon,
High Beech and Hereward have been enjoying after school football
skills and drills sessions with Buckhurst YFC coaches on Davenant's
floodlit all weather surface. |
|
|
|
|
|
|
Club coach, Ken Richbell explained more about the
Epping project: "We've been running these
sessions for four weeks now to see what kind of interest there is. A
typical week will see 25 children at our Tuesday session while Wednesday
can see as many as 40 children taking part." |
|
|
|
|
|
Ken, who runs the coaching sessions with his son David,
believes the project is a great introduction to football for young
children: "We've had Year One
through to Year Six taking part so it's a big mix. We start off with basic
skills and then try something a little bit more advanced." |

Buckhurst Hill YFC are currently working
towards FA Charter Standard Community Status and the children on the
Epping project have all be given a chance to join the club at their
Roding Lane ground. |
| |
| "Some of the
children have never had an opportunity to play football for a team
before so we hand out a leaflet at the end of the session explaining
more about our club. |
|
|
|
|
|
|
We've had some positive feedback from
the parents so if they want to come down for a visit and find out more
then they can," said Ken. |
|
|
|
|
|
Buckhurst Hill YFC move onto the Waltham Abbey area
for their next School Club Link project and ECFA Education Officer Lana
Bond commented: "This is a great example of how
Sports Colleges and Charter Standard clubs can work together to provide
children with quality football opportunities outside of the school
environment. |
|
|
"Credit must be given to Jo
Daniels, the Partnership Development Manager at the Davenant Foundation,
for getting the project off the ground." |

FOOTBALL FOR HAVERING
! |
|
|
 |
|
|
|
|
|
THE FA SCHOOL CLUB LINK PROJECT has reached Havering
with two local Charter Standard clubs teaming up with the Havering School
Sports Partnership to offer more football opportunities in the area.
Children from selected schools across Havering will benefit from
expert coaching when both Contrast Juniors YFC and Cougars YFC launch the
scheme this spring. |
|
|
|
|
|
|
ECFA Education Officer Lana Bond explained more: "The
School Club Link project has really taken off in Essex and we've already
seen successful partnerships formed in the Southend and Epping
areas."
"It's great that Havering have joined the project and I'm sure
they'll follow in the footsteps of our other excellent School Club Link
schemes." |
|
|

|
|
|
|

The Havering area also saw the conclusion of the FA
TOP Football scheme in its current form recently with Emerson Park Sports
College hosting the final session of the three year project.
TOP Football has been a glowing success in Essex with school
teachers gaining essential football coaching knowledge and the bonus of
free equipment for their school.
Lana commented: "Nearly 500 schools and
750 teachers will have benefited from the scheme countywide. This means a
massive investment of £144,000 worth of resources into helping schools
deliver sport." |
|
|
|
|
|
Primary school teachers will still be able to achieve
their TOP Football qualification through sessions run by the Essex County
FA and you can find out more by contacting Lana on... |
