GROUNDSMANSHIP COURSE

WINTER PITCHES

THE INSTITUTE OF GROUNDSMANSHIP are running courses this month on the maintenance and management of winter pitches in football and rugby...

The IOG run training courses delivered by professional instructors who are currently, or have in the past, been top level practicing groundsmen. In each case, a comprehensive training pack is issued to assist in the development of skills and practices. Each delegate receives a certificate of attendance.

On Wednesday 13 September, Writtle College hosts a Level One course which focuses on the practical skills required to prepare and maintain a sports surface.

The course will suit part-time or full-time individuals and volunteers who are involved in the maintenance of sports surfaces. It acts as an introduction for new groundspeople or as a refresher course to those who like to keep up-to-date with the latest techniques in the profession.

The one-day course, entitled 'Annual Preparation and Maintenance', involves the following subjects:
Definition of surface; Assessment of surface; Sequence of Annual Maintenance; Mowing, Scarification, Vertiucutting; Irrigation; Fertiliser Application; Top Dressing; Surface Drainage; Brushing and Dragmatting; Aeration; Rolling/Harrowing; Seeding; Laws of the Game (relevant to marking); Setting Out; Marking Compounds; Line Marking; Pests and Diseases; Equipment and its Maintenance; Aspects of Health and Safety

Courses can be booked on the Institute of Groundsmanship website, www.iog.org, and cost £55 to IOG members or £70 to non-members. Booking forms are also available from the County Office by contacting Simon Thomas at simon.thomas@essexfa.com or calling...
