Boca 'A' survived a late onslaught from Catholic United Minors 'A' to claim the first ever Essex Under 12s Cup with a 3-2 victory in the final at Stanway Rovers.

"We had it tough in the end, but the boys have been excellent," said Boca joint-boss Andy Swallow after his side's triumph. "Catholic's tails were up at the end and they did well to get back in it. We were a bit disappointed to concede for the first time in the competition, but even happier to hang on and get the win. The boys will remember this day for a long time."

Boca raced into a 3-0 lead before Catholic pulled back two late goals, but it wasn't quite enough for the Southend-based side to force extra time against Boca, who ply their trade at the Football Academy in Loughton. It was Boca who created the opening chances and they hit the bar early-on through Alex Jenkins' free-kick before they grabbed the lead on 10 minutes, Nana Yiadom turning home Callum Murphy's neat through ball from close range.

Catholic started brightly too, though, sand Sam Kimmence forced a good save out of Peter Smith following decent work by Aston Kirby though Boca had the last opportunity of the first half, D'scan Thzobalds seeing his twenty-yard shot dip just over the crossbar.

Boca came within inches of doubling their advantage a minute after the break, Yiadom seeing his shot cleared off the goal-line before the second goal did arrive on 39 minutes, Murphy turning and firing a half-volley into the net after he'd picked-up a knocked down free-kick.

Boca grabbed a decisive third goal on 48, Yiadom scoring for the second time as he pushed a low angled shot into the corner past on-rushing 'keeper Liam Holmes. But four minutes later, Catholic threw themselves a lifeline as they became the first side to score against Boca in the competition, Joe Beard heading home Conor Macleod's fantastic cross at the far post.

With just a minute of the 60 remaining, Catholic set-up a grand-slam finish as they stole a second goal, Bradley Seaden finding the bottom corner with a fine volley from the edge of the area, but Boca held on for a memorable victory.

As Swallow tells us, the victory completed a fine weekend for his team: "We treated the game as professionally as we could", he explained. "We came by coach and stayed together in the Marriott Hotel last night. The boys each had the match details stitched on their shirts too and we hope they had a taste of what it would be like to be a professional as we hope that's where a few of them will be one day."
