FINAL

Buckhurst Hill  2 v 0  Woodford Youth

Sunday 29th March 2009
at The Hawthorns  10:30am k.o

Stanway Rovers Football Club's Hawthorns ground is quickly becoming a happy hunting ground for Buckhurst Hill as the club followed up their 2008 Cordell Under 13s Cup success at the northerly venue by claiming this season's Essex Under 12s Cup supported by Chelmsford Radio.

The metropolitan Essex outfit became just the second ever winners of the trophy following Boca A's inaugural success last year after injury-time goals from Joe Kemp and Callum Maltese helped them to beat Woodford Youth 2-0. Manager Brad Maltese was full of praise for his squad, who had to overcome the loss of goalkeeper Jake Lewis after he suffered a bad head injury early in the second half: "I'm elated with the whole team. Jake has a large lump on his head and he has had to go to A&E, but we are hopeful he will be O.K. Dan O'Sullivan went in goal and he did an excellent job."

Lewis was hurt as he bravely came off of his goalline to save at the feet of Michael Morris and, after a long period of deliberation involving Essex County F.A. physiotherapist John Barwick, he was persuaded to leave the field. Buckhurst Hill had been in ascendancy, and Maltese conceded that he had feared the worst immediately after the stoppage: "For a few minutes, I think the lads thought, 'What's going on?' After that they raised their game and I don't think anyone could argue with the final scoreline."

The opening goal did not arrive until the third minute of additional time through Captain Kemp. The central defender timed his run to perfection to plant Ben Burgess' free-kick into the bottom left-hand corner of the net. Maltese provided the second with a touch of class eleven minutes into injury time. Having earlier fired over from an indirect free-kick, the Manager's son this time turned inside and out to craft an opening eight yards out before dispatching a fine finish across goal and inside the far post.

There was still time for O'Sullivan to make a tidy save from Morris' volley but, in general, Woodford's best opportunities had come during an even first period. Morris again was the principal figure in the action, racing onto Pierce Arbiso's through ball and forcing Lewis to come out of his goal sharply to clear in the 12th minute. In the final seconds of the half, Joe McDermott saw his shot blocked at close range and from the next move, Kenan Gokcimen was denied by Lewis, the 'keeper flinging himself to his right.

In between, Buckhurst Hill had failed to convert a penalty kick awarded after custodian Kai Anderson brought down Jamie Fuller. Fuller himself stepped up to take the spot-kick, but Anderson guessed correctly and saved low to the left-hand side. "At that stage, I didn't think it was going to be our day," Maltese revealed. "Jamie was through and, in my mind, there is no doubt that he would have scored."

"We could've gone in 2-0 up [William Osmond also shot wide from Maltese's cross], but I told them to forget the first half and after half-time the boys rallied," the Manager declared. "All credit to the boys for digging in and showing great character. This was our third cup final in as many seasons after two Echo League Cup victories, and I think that shows that this is a very special bunch of boys."
