Tag United manager Alan Houghton dedicated his club's first Sunday Veterans Cup success to the team's mothers after masterminding a 4-2 extra time triumph over Old Southendian.
Extra time strikes from current Southend United boss Steve Tilson and Brian Roach were sufficient to break the resolve of defending champions Old Southendian, who had forced the additional half-an-hour thanks to Mark Hampshire's stoppage time strike.
"I'm elated to have broken my duck," Houghton exclaimed as he surveyed the Burroughs Park venue that had staged his success. "It is a special day for Tag United to win this Cup, but I'd like to pay tribute to all the mums out there. Some of them can't be with us today, but they are the greatest in the world."
Southendian took the lead after just 4 minutes of the Southend Radio-supported final when Andy Elwell was upended in the penalty area and referee Carl Richardson pointed to the spot. Paul Moffat's initial effort was saved by Tag 'keeper Jim Batt, who then leapt up to block the rebound, and it took a third attempt from the defender to force the ball over the line. "After the penalty I thought it was going to be a case of déjà vu," Houghton said, remembering his side's narrow 3-2 defeat to Maltby in the same competition four years ago. "I thought that it was critical that we recovered well and equalised before half-time."
The leveller arrived in the 24th minute as Danny Greaves slipped the ball into the path of Steve Elmes and, despite a touch from Southendian stopper Chris Chapman, his shot nestled into the bottom left-hand corner of the net.
Tag had further opportunities to score before the break, Tilson stretching to touch an effort into the side-netting and Greaves miscuing with an identical result. Dave Matthews also saw a diving header blocked on the goal-line and he mis-directed an injury time chance wide as the Southend Borough Combination Veterans League pace-setters ended the first half strongly.
Batt saved Hampshire's early volley, although it was a wasteful Greaves that became the feature of the second period. The son of former Tottenham Hotspur and England striker Jimmy tapped wide from six yards before Chapman closed the angle to encourage another effort wide. However, Greaves made up for this profligacy thirteen minutes from the end as he collected David Field's square pass and nonchalantly arrowed a fine drive into the right-hand portion of the goal. "Danny missed a few tap-ins but he then took a great goal - he's the opposite to his father," was Houghton's assessment.
There was then to be a twist as the match moved into stoppage time. Southendian had shown they were not out of the tie when Garry Nelson curled a 25-yard free-kick towards the top corner with Batt making a fine save and, in the first minute of injury time, Jason Thomas galloped down the left flank. He crossed for Hampshire, who gleefully fired in his seventh goal of the competition and ensured he had netted in every round.
But Southendian's joy was short-lived. In just the third minute of extra time, Tilson made a decisive contribution as he drilled a strong left-footed finish through a packed penalty area from the edge of the box to covert Matthews' corner. The eventual 4-2 scoreline was confirmed five minutes later when substitute Roach controlled a lofted through-ball, took time to set himself, and fired into the roof of the net from close range.
"When they scored, I thought here we go again," said Houghton post-match. "It was another half-an-hour, but the way we were playing, I felt that we would be alright if we looked to keep the ball and played to our strengths. The final was a great advert for the veterans game. I am really pleased to have buried the ghosts of the last one and I'm now hoping that we can go on and win more finals." |
