THE SUNDAY JUNIOR CUP

2008-09

CUP FINAL

Gallow United  1 v 2  Royal Falcons

(After Extra Time)
Sunday 5th April 2009
Barrows Farm, Kick-Off 10:30pm
Royal Falcons Manager Gary Brunt believes the homework they undertook before their big day at Harlow Town F.C. was a major factor in them claiming a 2-1 triumph over Gallow United, claiming: "We identified their strengths and that gave us an advantage."

An extra time double from striker Lee Springer earned the Plaistow-based side's first Sunday Junior Cup success at Barrows Farm and Brunt was delighted all their hard work, on and off the field, had reaped rewards: "The research we conducted definitely paid-off and it was one of the reasons why we started so well. We're very, very pleased with the competition as a whole, not just the Final. All the games were great and the occasion of the final, having your own dugout and a fourth official, was excellent!"

It was third time unlucky for Gallow, who had been beaten in the Sunday Junior Trophy Finals of 2004 and 2005, but their despair was Falcons' delight as they etched their names on County Cup silverware for the first ever time, with a number of the side sticking together from their days in Falcons' youth sides.

Neither team was able to take a foothold in the match, although the better chances fell to Royal Falcons in the first half, culminating in what many believed was going to be the opener on 40 minutes. A long ball was chased down by Lee Springer, who managed to reach it before Gallow 'keeper Alex Hensman on the left but, having found John Hefford in the box, the Falcons forward was unable to make the most of the opportunity as Hensman made-up ground.

Falcons started the second half in a similar manner. Springer went close in the opening seconds, controlling a through ball but seeing his low shot strike a post. The Gallow defence were first to the ball, and cleared for a corner.

As full time approached, Gallow had their best opportunities of the game. Firstly, substitute Mat Clayden shot just wide then Michael Karabardak headed a corner just wide of the goal frame. Falcons, though, harboured the final threat of normal time as United managed to clear a looping Rory Walsh header off the goal line.

After the tie progressed into extra time, the deadlock was finally broken on 100 minutes as Royal Falcons grabbed the lead. A long ball forward saw Springer chase down the goalkeeper, who reached the ball first. But crucially his clearance struck a defender and fell to the feet of Springer, who controlled the ball and sent it into the unguarded net.

The flow of the football remained however, with both sides looking to find the target, and ten minutes later Gallow could have levelled. After a foul on the half-way line, referee John Burdon played an advantage as the ball squeezed through to Bradley Boreham who went on a powerful run and was tripped in the box. Captain Demddy Basimi stood up, but struck the ball wide of the target. This appeared to spur Falcons on, and after a further two minutes Springer doubled the advantage. Walsh found him in space and he managed to round the 'keeper before sliding the ball in to an empty goal.

Gallow were still not beaten, though, and two minutes later the arrears were halved. Adam Collier rushed into the penalty area and referee Burdon adjudged he was fouled, leaving Collier to take over the spot-kick duties and sweep the ball into the net. United strived to find a goal to take the tie to spot-kicks, but Falcons were resilient enough to see the game out and earn a victory in a fine advertisement for Sunday football.

"I was on my knees praying for both their penalties," Brunt revealed. "The first one they missed I thought was a definite penalty, whereas the second they scored I didn't think was! It's hard to keep restrained when the players around you are so tense but we held on and claimed our club's first ever County Cup!"
