A single first-half goal from Hungarian defender Zoltan Liptak clinched the FansFocus.Com Essex Senior Cup for Southend United in front of a bumper 2,995 crowd at Roots Hall.

Liptak's decisive strike arrived on 27 minutes, clinching a tight encounter that brought United's first Senior Cup success for eleven years.

"We're pleased to have won the trophy," declared Shrimpers reserve boss Dean Austin afterwards. "It was nice for Zoltan to grab the winner. He's had some good moments in his first year in England and has proved to be a great header of the ball, which was crucial again tonight."

The Senior Cup crown has completed a fine year for United's young Reserve side and Austin is aware of the merits it holds for his team: "The competition has proved to be a good learning curve for many of the players. I don't think this was our best performance, but we were solid against a very strong Chelmsford side. They were a good test for us."

The first Senior Cup Final between these two sides got off to a flying start. With just 2 minutes on the clock City's Mario Noto hit a twenty-yard shot just over the top, and moments later, United 'keeper Steve Collis did well to block James Lawson's low drive.

Southend's first chance saw a great Alex Revell cross fired inches over the top from a tight angle by Charles Ademeno. Then a rare mistake by United's Johnny Herd led to City wide-man Ricky Holmes bringing another save out of Collis. This preceded the Shrimpers being presented with an excellent chance to take the lead, Matt Harrold shooting wide of the post having been played clean through by Revell.

The deciding goal arrived shortly afterwards on 27 minutes. A Franck Moussa corner saw Liptak's initial header saved by Danny Gay and Ademeno's follow-up was also blocked before Liptak stabbed home the second loose ball from six yards.

Noto saw his cheeky fifty-yard lob well saved by Collis just minutes after the interval and Stuart Ainsley also saw his fierce shot along the floor blocked by Herd. Southend had the final opportunity of the evening as Charlie MacDonald glanced a Revell cross just wide of Gay's goal.

"I felt we made a good account of ourselves this evening, although we're disappointed not to have grabbed a goal," explained Chelmsford boss Jeff King after his side's narrow reverse. "I felt we got on top of the game in the second half and we could have created a few more chances. However, we're pleased to have got here and now we can look forward to hopefully winning the league, which is what we set-out to do when I came to the Club."

King was also quick to praise the impressive City following: "Our fans have been fantastic all season. It was great to see so many of them here tonight and I know the players really appreciate it. We'll look to win the league title for them."
