BURNHAM RAMBLERS
3 - 2 CLAPTON |
| |
Two goals from substitute Ross Wall
rescued Burnham Ramblers as they progressed to the Third Round of
the FansFocus.Com Essex Senior Cup with a late 3-2 triumph over
Clapton.
An entertaining clash saw the visitors from the East End threaten
with a series of early long-range strikes. Diminutive midfielder
Neil Matthews saw his fierce 30-yard drive gathered at the second
attempt by Ramblers 'keeper Chris Baker after taking a wicked
deflection. Moments later Matthews then hit another rasping shot
inches wide of the upright.
A thumping half volley by Tons' Dave Armstrong was well held by
Baker before Burnham could have taken the lead with their first
chance on 12 minutes. A Daniel Jones corner dropped loose to Ross
Adams whose six-yard effort bounced into the ground and over the top
of Reece Madden's crossbar.
As the game began to really come to life, Clapton's Lewis Jones saw
his curling strike saved and Ramblers' Lloyd Wilson will have been
disappointed that his shot when having been played clean though on
goal, was directed straight at stopper Madden.
It was the home side who did open the deadlock on 33 minutes, a low
cross from Adams being poked home by Wilson at the far post. Clapton
were not behind for long, though, forcing a leveller just six
minutes later as Nathan Fletcher firmly headed home Matthews' corner
at the back post.
Burnham started the second half strongly and, five minutes after the
interval, Adams drove an effort just off target following good work
by Nicholas Muir before an ambitious 25 yard volley from Daniel
Jones flew over the top.
The Tons grabbed the lead for the first time on 63 minutes after
Woodard's terribly short back-pass fell into the path of Lewis Jones
who calmly took the ball past Baker before slotting into an
unguarded net.
Clapton soon had two further chances to put the game to bed. A
terrific shot from Armstrong, managing to pluck the ball from
beneath his feet, struck the underside of the crossbar from twenty
yards and then great build-up play culminated in Chris Thomas'
angled ten-yard shot landing in the gloves of Baker.
Those missed chances soon proved costly as Burnham hauled themselves
level on 77 minutes, an in-swinging Matthew Hambleton flag kick
finding the head of substitute Wall who forced the ball over the
line with the assistance of the post and goalkeeper Madden.
Wall had a chance to put Ramblers ahead five minutes later when he
scuffed a shot wide having been set-up by Jerry Lyons, but Clapton
also could have stolen a goal as substitute Sinclair Adamson drove
an angled shot straight across the face of goal following a Simon
Miller assist.
The winner arrived a minute into stoppage time, Wall latching onto a
loose ball before striding forward and hitting a low shot just
inside the right hand post, giving custodian Madden little chance.
