THE FansFocus.Com SENIOR CUP

BURNHAM RAMBLERS   0 - 3   REDBRIDGE

Redbridge progressed to the last eight of the FansFocus.Com Essex SeniorCup with the help of two second-half strikes from Billy Holland.

The club, managed by former Wimbledon forward Dean Holdsworth, led at half-time thanks to Aaron Gayle's fortunate strike, and were further assisted after the break when Burnham defender Chris Baker was dismissed for violent conduct.

Essex Senior League Ramblers, who defeated Waltham Abbey in the previous round, started the encounter well after the match started fifteen minutes late, and Nicholas Muir's curling shot in the seventh minute flew into the side-netting.

Holdsworth was unhappy with his charges' first-half performance, although both Carl Bruce and Billy Holland went close with headers. However, Muir was a constant threat at the other end, and having rounded Tony Tucker, only lacked the composure that would have averted a slashing shot from an acute angle careering over the crossbar.

With Gayle denied by Dave McCartney's near-post block, it was left to Tucker to take centre stage; the visiting goalkeeper had to be at his best to brilliantly tip Chris Day's fierce shot around the left-hand upright.

Opposing custodian McCartney didn't enjoy a similar moment nine minutes before the interval. He rolled a free-kick from inside his own penalty area straight to Gayle, who held his nerve to stroke into the bottom left-hand corner from 25 yards out.

Gayle could have added a second shortly afterwards, but his header was directed over whilst off-balance, and David Collins was unlucky when his free-kick swirled around the wall and cannoned off of the base of the left-hand post early in the second period.

The dangerous Lloyd Wilson later burst through the middle and saw Tucker effect another good save, parrying the ball to safety, although Baker's red card, collected after he drove a loose ball into a melee of scuffling players, proved the defining moment.

It took until the 65th minute for Redbridge to extend their lead, Holland turning in from close range after Jeff Hammond had driven the ball into the six-yard box from the right-hand side.

Anthony Church saw a shot tipped over, but only five minutes had passed when Holland, who netted a number of goals in the Senior League himself for A.F.C. Hornchurch, tapped in from Collins' viciously in-swinging corner.

There could have been further goals - substitute Leon Antoine had a header clawed around the post by McCartney and Holland narrowly missed out on hat-trick with a well-hit free-kick - but Burnham held on, even though they were effectively reduced to nine men when Adam Dale limped off with an injury a quarter-of-an-hour before the end.
