Although the eventual scoreline indicated a straight-forward success, Emstar boss Dean Emmons was keen to praise his West Essex opponents: "We were up against it in the first 25 minutes and I was set to change the formation, so all credit to Sheering," he said. The Southend Borough Combination Division Two side were forced to field captain Ben Bradford in an unfamiliar left-wing position, and Sheering had chances to take advantage as United adjusted to accommodate the regular centre-half.

Inside the first three minutes, Daniel Carr smashed a left-footed shot into the side-netting before Dave Hardy was given the opportunity to round goalkeeper Bill Mailey, only to see Boyd Moore race back and clear the ball off of the line. Ricky Hammond went even closer for the Bishop's Stortford, Stansted & District League outfit when he rattled the crossbar from Daniel Brett's free-kick, whilst Hardy wasted a fine opportunity by slashing across the face of goal from Arron Clark's quick throw-in.

As Emstar slowly edged their way into proceedings, Sam Hendrix's fierce shot was directed against the outside of the right-hand post and Steve Barnard made a good save from Starkey's stooping header. But United took the lead on 26 minutes through Smith, who picked up the ball on the edge of the six-yard box and rounded Barnard before drilling low into the bottom right-hand corner. "Colin played a blinder," Emmons admitted. "Once we scored, we got the ball on the floor and played with confidence. I thought we controlled the game, and the second half saw the lads put in a great performance."

Sam Cattaneo had the first opportunity for Emmons' team after the break, but saw his effort blocked by the legs of Barnard just before the hour mark. At the other end, Hammond was denied for Sheering once again from a Brett set-piece, this time Mailey flying to his left to effect a fantastic fingertip intervention. "It was a great save," was the Manager's verdict on the match-defining moment as, twenty minutes into the second half, Smith added his second to compound Sheering's misery, capitalising on defensive hesitancy to squeeze a shot between Barnard and his left-hand upright.

With just a quarter-of-an-hour remaining, Starkey netted the goal of the game, liningup a thirty-yard effort that dipped after passing Barnard and flew into the top left-hand corner of the net. Smith had a chance to complete his hat-trick, but flashed his shot wide of the post with victory already assured.

"It's great - I'm really happy for the lads as they deserved it, and there should also be particular thanks to our supporters, who were really vocal throughout. We still have a League Cup Final and games in hand in the League, but our main target was to win this Trophy," Emmons concluded.
