BILLERICAY TOWN   1  v  2   HULLBRIDGE SPORTS

Hullbridge Sports claimed their second Pelly Under 18s Cup success by beating Billericay Town, thanks to an "unbelievable" Joe Gardner thirty-yard strike at New Lodge.

There appeared to be no danger when Gardner collected the ball just outside the right-hand edge of the penalty area, but the Hullbridge forward smashed a dipping half-volley over Billericay goalkeeper Alfie Brincatt from a wide angle that flew into the top left-hand corner of the goal a little under twenty minutes from the end.

"It was an unbelievable strike, but then Joe always scores brilliant goals," Hullbridge manager John Fernandez revealed after the fixture. "He isn't the most prolific scorer, but when he does net, they are always spectacular."

Sports had enjoyed the better first half, but Billericay responded after the break to even the contest up. Frankie White warmed Brincatt's gloves with a long-range shot, whilst centre-half Harry Bethwick saw the Town custodian turn his looping header over the crossbar from close-range. Billericay full-back Mike Rogers' long throw did cause some panic in the Hullbridge penalty area, but Richard Mann spread himself to block Lewis Godbold's point-blank effort.

Hullbridge raced up to the other end and took the lead in the 18th minute. Kyle Musson's free-kick was delivered deep into the six-yard box and, although Lewis Manor's initial shot was parried, Alex Coghlan swept home the rebound.

From that point, Hullbridge dominated the chances, with Gardner and Keegan Gwebdu constant threats from wide positions. Indeed, Gardner slashed over from Manor's simple pass before turning provider by delivering a corner onto the head of Musson, who nodded over from six yards out.

"Billericay defended really well in the first half," Fernandez admitted. But in the second period, Town hit the offensive. Harry Chatting curled a free-kick over the crossbar and then Godbold smashed over when play opened up in front of him.

Twenty minutes after the break, Billericay equalised from the penalty spot. Rob Edkins cut the ball back to Joe Tredwell, and his scuffed goal-bound shot connected with Beckwith's hand. Tom Newell stepped up to send Mann the wrong way.

"I thought the penalty was a little harsh," was Fernandez's verdict. "At that stage we were under the cosh, but the second goal changed all that. We held it together, and I had to make substitutions to freshen things up."

Just before Gardner's wonder strike, Oliver Tatten-Bennett was robbed of possession by Edkins, who was denied as Mann got his fingertips to a fierce shot. Later, the shot-stopper leapt to his right to save Chatting's strong effort, and those saves drew high praise from his manager: "That point-blank save was superb. I couldn't ask for any more from him - he was brilliant."

Mann himself was also delighted. "It's fantastic to have won," the custodian stated, "especially since I support Billericay! The lads behind the goal were giving me a bit of stick, but that was fine. In fact, I think it encouraged me to play better!"

Hullbridge could have added a third, but substitute Daniel Barrington blasted over from distance with decoy runners pulling defenders out of his path. "I reckon that there are five players who have played a lot of matches this season for the Under 18s, the Reserves and the First Team," Fernandez concluded. "It has been a brilliant campaign."
