THE PELLY CUP

FINAL

Stanway Rovers  2 v 3  Thurrock A

Wed 29 April 2009
at New Lodge
  7:45pm k.o

A late goal from substitute Richard Choi left Thurrock boss Stuart Marshall delighted with the club's first Pelly Cup silverware as Stanway Rover were beaten, 3-2, at Billericay Town F.C.

"It was a bit of a scrappy game if truth be told," was Marshall's honest reaction afterwards, but he was pleased to see his side bring home the big prize. "I'm absolutely delighted for everyone at the club," he continued. "Chairman Tommy South has put so much in and I'm really pleased for Secretary Mick Keeble, he has got through so much work. It's as much for them as it is for the players and myself."

"We have a huge youth setup here and to have not won a youth competition thus far wasn't really right. I'm pleased we've managed to clinch one tonight. A number of the boys who played this evening have already featured for the Reserves and I'm sure more will follow and also that they'll make the First Team. To play Blue Square South football will be a great reward," Marshall enthused.

Thurrock didn't have it their own way in the Final, though, having to battle from a goal behind as well as a second leveller before Choi's instinctive finish clinched the tie with just six minutes remaining.

Stanway started brightly and Joe Davis had already gone close with a long-range effort before they took an 8th-minute lead when Corin Ridgewell latched onto a terrific ball to the far post by smashing an angled shot that 'keeper Billy Byrne could only tip onto the underside of the crossbar before the ball bounced into the net.

Rovers had dominated the early exchanges, but Thurrock were thrown a lifeline when they were awarded a penalty after Adam Frost felled Tony Boyle in the box. Skipper Reiss Gilbey duly converted from the spot to bring his side back on level terms.

By half-time Thurrock were ahead thanks to a goal in the first minute of added time. Brad Warner's right-flank corner wasn't properly cleared and a second ball into the danger area saw Rovers' Jake Westerman's attempted clearance strike Sam Connor and ricochet into the net.

The nature of Thurrock's second goal was unlucky on Stanway, but they got themselves back into the game, levelling the arrears on the hour mark. Substitute Scott Yearling latched onto two neatly flicked forward headers before smashing an unstoppable volley inside the near post and past Byrne from eight yards. Just two minutes later Yearling came within a whisker of giving his side the lead, but had to look on and see his low shot beat Byrne but bounce back off the post to safety.

Stanway had further chances, through Ridgewell and Michael Cheek, but it was Thurrock who stole the tie. Boyle had already seen his near post effort beaten away by 'keeper Aaron Hosford before the Rovers stopper failed to hold onto a stinging long-ranger from Boyle and Choi was on hand to neatly finish from close range to win it.
