FINAL

Tigers B  0 v 3  Woodford Youth

Sunday 29th March 2009
at The Hawthorns  2:30pm k.o

Woodford Youth earned the right to represent Essex in the Tesco Under 13s Cup national competition after claiming the Cordell Cup with an entertaining 3-0 victory over Tigers B at Stanway Rovers Football Club.

Backed by a vociferous and loyal support, many of whom had been present during the morning session of a double-header including their Under 12s' game at the Hawthorns, Woodford sprung something of a surprise result after suffering twin Echo League defeats to their cup final opponents earlier in the season.

Frank Massingham's team followed their younger age group up the A12, but the Woodford boss revealed he had not told his own squad the earlier scoreline, which had seen the Foxes lose out to Buckhurst Hill. "I tried to keep the Under 12s' result to myself. I don't know if some of the lads found out once we got to the ground, but I just wanted to concentrate on our own game. I'm over the moon to have won," he disclosed.

"Now we go on to represent Essex, and will do the best we can," Massingham said of his team's journey to Roehampton Vale, where the South-Eastern Regional Finals of the Tesco Cup will be held. "We don't want to let anyone down. Tigers are an excellent side, and going 1-0 up represented a good start. After that, we never let them into the game."

Tigers had made the brighter start, with Luke O'Sullivan's overhead kick blocked and Jack Barraclough following up with an effort fired straight at Dean Bonning. Callum Wells in the Tigers goal then advanced out to save at the feet of Moses Mayele from Cameron Shakes' well-weighted through ball before play switched again to the Woodford penalty area, where Aiden O'Connell flighted a free-kick past the post and Jonathan Nzengo blasted at Bonning from close-range.

There was a warning about Woodford's potency up-front on 20 minutes when Mayele fizzed an effort across the face of goal before strike partner Shakes did find the back of the net. In the 32nd minute, the forward collected Peter McDermott's pass and dribbled around Wells to tap into the unguarded goal.

After the interval, Tigers had chances to level with Kemal Cetinay seeing Bonning spill his shot just the wrong side of the upright and O'Connell's free-kick well claimed by the custodian. Mayele again fired wide for the Foxes with just Wells to beat and that preceded the crucial second strike ten minutes into the second half. Jamie Hursit's driven effort from distance was pushed out by the 'keeper into the path of Dylan Snow, who gratefully swept home from ten yards.

On the hour mark, Woodford made absolutely sure of the win with a third goal. Hursit provided the assist with a pass into the feet of the on-rushing Ameer Mer, who sprung the offside trap to slide the ball underneath the body of Wells and contribute the third goal.

"I'm absolutely ecstatic," Massingham claimed. "I'm speechless. The boys have come in, it's a cup final and we just wanted to do the best we could. I think putting Phillipe Herman in midfield was the key - he was the Man of the Match for me. Shakesy has put us one-up after nipping around the 'keeper and slotting in, then the second is a great goal as Dylan had to be alert to knock it in. The game's never over until the final whistle goes, but when we broke to make it 3-0, I thought it was going to be our day."

"We were able to ease up a little bit and just try to enjoy it. I'm thrilled for the boys. I'd like to say that Stanway Rovers F.C. and the Essex County F.A. have made us more than welcome today, and the treatment we have received has been first class," he added.
