"I suppose that was the turning point," was the verdict of Daggers boss John Knight after the match, reflecting on the quick-fire double from Tom Byrne and Chris Bush that led to exuberant celebrations from the holders. "We expected a hard game, but in the second half we played much better football, keeping the ball down and getting in behind the Chelmsford defence."

The match had failed to light-up in the opening period but, just seven minutes after the interval, Dagenham took the lead. Alfie Wren's corner saw Steven Cottey's effort pushed out by Lewis Batchford, though the Essex Under 16s Representative goalkeeper could do nothing about Billy Proudfoot turning in the rebound.

The lead lasted just over a minute. City skipper Josh Brown delivered a high free-kick into the Daggers penalty area and a defensive header was only directed into the path of Miles Lewis, who drilled a clinical finish into the bottom left-hand corner from beside the penalty spot.

The frantic nature of proceedings continued apace with both teams battling hard for supremacy, and it was Dagenham who edged ahead again on the hour. Wren's long throw was pivotal, Byrne hooking the ball just inside the far post. With barely time to draw breath, Daggers had opened up a two-goal cushion, Wren again proving the catalyst by delivering a right-wing corner that swung onto the head of Bush, the forward nodding powerfully into the corner of Batchford's net.

There were a number of opportunities for Dagenham to extend their advantage, with Wren missing a chance to score himself when he headed wide following Batchford's clumsy attempt to claim Jermaine Cherobin's cross. Tyrone Scarlett slid a shot wide when the goalkeeper narrowed the angle impressively and, during stoppage time, Batchford saved from Tom Rice before forcing Scott Wheeler wide when the replacement seemed set to score.

"I'm very pleased to have won," Knight beamed. "I have to pay credit to Chelmsford because they never died down. At the end, I think they just ran out of a bit of puff, but then so did we - there was no quarter given by either side at any stage of the match."

It was this defensive work that epitomised the first half, particularly from the City rearguard. The closest either side came to scoring was a Wren corner which was swerving wickedly goalwards before Batchford clawed the ball over. Chelmsford forwards Lewis and Stuart Latimer saw wayward efforts drift wide, whilst Batchford just got enough onto an Aaron Hogarth half-volley to divert it wide.

Knight concluded that the final result meant a lot to Dagenham & Redbridge, who switched into their favoured red shirts for the trophy presentation: "It is four years in a row now for Dagenham, and that is some achievement. A lot of our players had the experience having appeared in the Rosser Under 15s Cup last season [as Westward Boys], and we have only made five acquisitions since then, so that was quite important as well."
