THE CASSELLS CUP

FINAL

East Thurrock Utd  2 v 0  Hannakins Farm

Wed 22 April 2009
at New Lodge
7:45pm k.o

First half goals from Billy Anderson and Ryan Plom were enough to earn East Thurrock United the Cassells Under 16s Cup as they defeated Hannakins Farm by two goals to nil at Billericay Town's New Lodge.

For boss Darren Anderson, it was a third County Cup title in just four years, having previously clinched the Cordell Under 13s and Andrews Under 14s Cups with Corringham Athletic. "What we have achieved has been absolutely phenomenal," Anderson explained. "There were three boys in the side tonight who won our first County Cup at Under 13s and five from the side who won it the following year. I believe we were the first side to have won in successive seasons, it's just a shame we didn't progress in the Under 15s last year, as we could have been going for the whole lot!"

East Thurrock looked the part, too, and faced with a talented Hannakins Farm side, the stole an early lead. Jake Fry's long throw found manager's son Anderson, who looped a header over stranded 'keeper Alfie Cross from ten yards with only 3 minutes on the clock.

Hannakins played their part, though, and they had chances to level when East Thurrock stopper Billy Manning did well to firstly hold onto a crisp Harry Ellis shot before bravely pouncing on the ball at the feet of Chris Mann when the Hannakins midfielder had looked set to roll the ball home after neatly cutting into the six-yard box.

East Thurrock's decisive second arrived on 17, a long free-kick finding its way to Plom who neatly lobbed home from fifteen yards. The Rocks were then denied a third by the width of the crossbar as Fry's free-kick struck the woodwork and bounced to safety. They were also unlucky not to grab another just after the break when George Lawrence's effort was blocked following good work by Jon Atmore.

Hannakins' chances included Lee Juniper firing fractionally high from a most acute angle and Eb Djan's effort tested Manning, but it ultimately proved to be joy for an East Thurrock side who have experienced unrivalled success together.

"We'll go into Under 18s now and try our luck there," suggested Anderson afterwards. "There is a great set-up at East Thurrock and these boys have a decent chance of First Team football. They certainly deserve it."

And what of his side's early goal, setting them on route to victory? "That is something we practised!" revealed Darren. "Jake Fry has a great throw and it landed perfectly for my own son to score. Getting an early goal was crucial, it's happened against us before and it will have crushed Hannakins a little. They really tested us, though, and I'm delighted we've managed to come out on top."
