(After Extra Time)

Basildon Boys Club goalkeeper James Dudley was the hero as he saved two Lexden Saints penalties in a dramatic conclusion to the Andrews Under 14s Cup at Wivenhoe Town's Broad Lane ground.

The shot-stopper dived to his left to deny Luc Williams and Jake Hughes with successive spot-kick saves in the shoot-out, leaving his manager, Mick Jacobs, exasperated: "I have confidence in James because he loves penalties. In fact, he told me before the game that he wanted the match to end with penalties, but I think I'd have preferred winning in normal time."

The two teams could not be separated after seventy minutes of intense action and a further twenty in terms of additional time, although that should not detract from the excellent standard of football on show, especially in the midfield.

Jacobs paid tribute to Lexden after seeing his side triumph at Under 14s level having lost out in the Cordell Under 13s Cup twelve months ago: "I thought we were fantastic in the first half, but they came back at us. We dealt with that, and should perhaps have grabbed a second goal. They were a tough side, and this match physically took it out of us. This was our second County final, though, and you would expect to win one of the two."

Basildon almost took the lead a quarter-of-an-hour into the contest as Charlie Kirby slashed Alfie Smith's cross over from an acute angle and Tony Jacobs was only denied by Aaron Boots when he rounded goalkeeper Ben Gallifant to shoot goalwards.

Luke Winter and Lexden's Deasko Garner traded wayward efforts before Basildon took the lead on the stroke of half-time. Winter, by some distance the shortest player on the pitch, battled into the box and, although Lewis Bailey's challenge averted his own shot, the loose ball fell to Jacobs, who stroked into an unguarded net.

The lead lasted just nine minutes after the break, during which time Hughes' hopeful free-kick curled harmlessly past the post. The midfielder was involved in the strike, collecting the ball after Ben Phillips had won it with a crunching tackle in midfield, spreading possession out to Edward Field, who arrowed his shot into the top left-hand corner of the net from thirty yards.

His fantastic strike forced Basildon to come forward again, and Gallifant held Joe Cox's swerving effort before saving from Winter. However, Dudley proved his worth as a stopper in added time, blocking Josh Harrison's shot with his legs as he advanced off of his goal-line.

The additional period saw Gallifant save Jacobs' shot and Field smash over from six yards out, setting up the spectre of spot-kicks. Basildon did hold a 3-1 advantage before Gallifant saved Cox's penalty, and Lewis Axcell held his nerve to bring the scoreline level. The winning moment arrived when Winter strolled up and drilled his effort along the ground with aplomb to hand his team a 4-3 victory from twelve yards.

"Now we have a League title to go for," Jacobs anticipated. "We also have a League Cup final at Roots Hall next month, so there is plenty of football to play for this season before we aim to participate in the Eastern Junior Alliance next year."
