THE ANDREWS CUP

FINAL

East Thurrock Utd  4 v 2  Lexden Saints

Sun 26 April 2009
at Wallace Binder Ground
  10:30am k.o

Two goals from Manager's son Jonathan Simes helped East Thurrock United recover from a half-time setback and claim a second County Cup inside four days, lifting the Andrews Under 14s trophy after seeing-off Lexden Saints.

East Thurrock raced into a 2-0 lead, but had been pegged back by the interval as Lexden, also beaten finalists twelve months earlier, grabbed two goals in three late first half minutes. However, East Thurrock hit back after the re-start, sealing a 4-2 victory and adding to the Cassells Under 16s crown they won the previous midweek.

"These are great times for our youngsters" claimed East Thurrock boss Ian Simes. "We have a number of sides coming through and, with so many young players making the First Team at East Thurrock, all the boys believe they ultimately have a chance, which is great for them. The First Team manager, John Coventry, is fully supportive. That can only be a good thing and it's paying off."

After seeing their two-goal first-half lead wiped out, Simes was also pleased with how his side responded: "We looked comfortable in the first half but, after we conceded those goals, we had to re-group and re-focus. As soon as we got the ball down and started playing, as we know we can, we got a good grip on the fixture. I'm delighted for everyone that we went on to win."

Colchester's Lexden Saints created the first opening as Jack Bullock curled an effort over the top, but East Thurrock grabbed an early advantage, taking the lead on 15 minutes when Simes received a pass from Sam Kruger before despatching a low, 15-yard shot inside the near post.

Saints 'keeper Jordan King made an exceptional stop to tip Simes' stinging 20-yarder around the post, but he was left helpless on 27 minutes as Jim Cook squeezed in front of the 'keeper to flick home Kruger's corner and double East Thurrock's advantage.

Lexden earned themselves a life-line two minutes before the interval, though, Conner Davison's free-kick evading the East Thurrock defence and falling perfectly for Brandon Sage to side-foot home at the back post. East Thurrock's immediate response was for Kruger to smash a shot against the underside of the bar, but Lexden levelled on the stroke of half-time, Karl Bartlett looping a header over 'keeper Jake Smith after a teasing left-flank centre from Davison.

East Thurrock heads didn't drop, though, and eight minutes into the second half they led once more. A fine run into the box by Lewis Scott saw the ball cut across the face of goal where Simes was on-hand to fire into the top corner. The game was then won on 50 minutes as East Thurrock grabbed their fourth, Cook's dangerous ball into the area unfortunately guided past his own 'keeper by Lexden defender Conner Mainstone.
