Roll of Honour

The Saturday Premier Cup, and its associated forerunners, have quite a complex background! The Saturday Premier Cup itself was inaugurated for season 2002/3 and was a merger of the Essex Intermediate Cup and the Essex Senior Trophy, the latter competition being exclusively for the reserve teams of senior clubs.

The Essex Intermediate Cup, for which the current Premier Cup trophy was awarded, began life in 1950 and, in its early existence, also included senior reserve sides, much like today. That was until the Senior Trophy became a reserve competition in its own right in 1994. The Senior Trophy came into being following the disbandment of the Essex Professional Cup in 1976.

The Professional Cup was a prestigious competition for the county’s ‘professional’ clubs and was won by Southend United on more occasions than any other club. The other senior sides in the county played, during this time, for the Essex Senior Cup. Following the disbandment of the Professional Cup, the county’s leading sides competed for the Senior Cup and the other senior clubs for the Senior Trophy, which assumed the silverware of the Professional Cup.

All senior sides were included in the Senior Cup from season 1994/95, at which time the Senior Trophy was competed for only by senior reserve sides before being merged with the Intermediate Cup in 2002.
