ESSEX WELCOMES NEW SKILLS COACH TEAM

The Football Association and Tesco have revealed details of a far-reaching programme aimed at giving youngsters up and down the country the opportunity to get active and have fun while improving their football skills.

A Coaching session at Southend's Priory Park

The three-year programme, co-ordinated by The F.A. and funded by Tesco and the National Sports Foundation, aims to give one million children in England top-quality skills coaching by summer 2010. A total of 66 specialist skills coaches have been located in twelve different counties throughout the country aimed with the task of raising technical standards of players at the 5-11 age group.

Essex are one of the twelve counties who now have a team of six new skills coaches to support the development of young players within the county. The coaches will deliver fundamental football sessions in schools and clubs, as well as developing countywide skills centres, so youngsters can be inspired to get active and maximise their ability, whatever their level.

The programme will focus not only on improving young players' technical ability but also developing key movement skills such as agility, balance, co-ordination and speed which are vital elements to assist in a youngster's long-term player development.

Essex's Skills Programme will be lead by Matthew Joseph as team leader, and assisted by coaches Rob O' Brien, Luke Williams, Stephen Maker, Paul Barry and Oliver Karger.  The team will work closely with the Essex F.A. and their Football Development Department to further support clubs, schools and young players in raising standards throughout the County.

The team of coaches will have a number of roles, including supporting the County's Charter Standard clubs with in-service training, providing skills sessions within schools and, of course, helping to raise technical standards of young players within Essex through the new F.A. Skills Centres that will commence in September.

The team will also be out and about in the County during the summer months, encouraging youngsters to test their skills on the F.A. Skills Challenges, a new awards programme that allows players of all ability levels to practice and improve their individual skills.

As part of this initiative, the F.A. have also launched a website to support the programme, where 5-11 year olds can sign-up at www.TheFA.com/Skills  to join 'the greatest club in England'. On registering, youngsters can watch coaching videos, download skills challenges and get specialist advice and encouragement.
