"An ideal way to say thank you," is
how Essex County F.A. Senior Football Development
Officer Brendan Walshe described the fifth Charter
Standard Day at Shrub End, Colchester, on Saturday
24th May, with over one hundred participants
revelling in the sunkist festival of football.

The event, directed in
conjunction with McDonalds and Colchester United
Community Sports Trust, was the latest yearly
instalment of fun organised on behalf of the
County's ever-growing brood of inspirational clubs
who follow the F.A. Charter Standard scheme. The
best practice guide sets yardsticks of coaching,
administration and child protection for all clubs
outside the Football League and Premier League as
a benchmark for quality to improve the playing
experience for all. |

|
| "This event is a way
of thanking all Charter Standard clubs for their
hard work over the past year as well as providing
both boys and girls with the opportunity to have a
fun day out," added Brendan, who was involved
behind the scenes alongside F.A. Skills Coaches
Paul Barry, Oliver Karger, Stephen Maker, Luke
Williams and Rob O'Brien and representatives from
C.U.C.S.T. "Approximately ninety-five
children and ten coaches were in attendance and
the day ran very well. |
|
| |
| All the players from the
clubs got the opportunity to take part in all of
the skill stations and they seemed to enjoy
themselves." |

The players enjoyed being taken around the stations,
which included 'Speed Shot' where they saw how hard
they could shoot into an enormous inflatable goal.
Sam from Galleywood Y.F.C. recorded 48mph, netting
himself a signed pennant from Colchester United F.C.
along with a Skills Ball in the process.
The Skills Challenges organised also included
dribbling, passing, shooting and small-sided games.
No cost was placed upon those who took part in the
event which was open to clubs who had girls and boys
in the Under 10s age group. Clubs were entitled to
bring up to twenty players in total, each receiving
a Goody Bag containing a certificate of attendance.
While the players were darting around, their club
coaches had the morning off as they were invited to
attend a coaches' education session led by Rob
O'Brien to provide them with new ideas to take back
to their clubs. "We have to thank all the
coaches who were involved in making the sessions fun
and enjoyable as well as very beneficial in terms of
player development," Brendan continued.
"We've already had some really good feedback
from the coaches who took part in the education part
of the event so overall it was a positive experience
for all who took part."
Amongst those brimming with praise was Marina Bull,
Chairperson of Flitch Y.F.C., who announced:
"We all thoroughly enjoyed the day. The boys
found the skills sessions really useful and
enjoyable and our coaches enjoyed their
sessions."
Flitch already benefit from the coaching of F.A.
Skills Team Leader Matt Joseph, formerly of
Tottenham Hotspur and Leyton Orient, as the
revolutionary three-year pilot scheme continues to
provide a team of specialist professional coaches to
work with children, coaches and club representatives
assisting with the development of its current and
future club players, delivering fundamental football
sessions to improve the children's technical
ability.
The Stebbing-based club are planning to expand as a
result and will soon be holding trials to attract
more young players. Further details can be obtained
