It's Registration Time! If you're a Level 1-6 match official you should have received your re-registration form by now, so get in touch if it's not yet dropped through your letterbox.
There were previously some technical issues with online re-registrations but the IT Department at Wembley Stadium have assured us these have now been resolved. Thanks for bearing with us while we got to the bottom of the problems - we're now back up and running again!
Snoods in Football - A Thing of the Past! Followers of football fashion take note - the snood is no longer an acceptable item to wear during matches after the garment was outlawed with immediate effect during the annual meeting of the International Football Association Board in Wales.
The increasingly popular scarves, often worn by Premier League stars on television, had filtered down the system to be displayed in grassroots football. However, the Board deemed them a potential danger if an opponent pulled them and they were not considered part of the Basic Equipment as outlined under Law 4 - Players’ Equipment.
Social Networking Websites - Social Networking Websites have now become a part of everyday life and are accessed by many people from all walks of life. It is an individual’s right to use such sites as they wish, within the bounds of legal acceptability.
However, as a Match Official in the professional and semi professional game, there is a responsibility to conduct one’s self in a professional manner, both on and off the field of play. Inappropriate use of these sites may leave a Match Official open to criticism, comment or ridicule, even if the matter is of a personal nature.
Inappropriate comments regarding refereeing issues or other issues on such sites which could bring football, referees or The Football Association into disrepute may make it necessary for The Football Association to take action against the Match Official in question.
Please therefore think carefully before posting on such sites. The FA would not wish you to jeopardise your position as a Match Official by making inappropriate or ill founded social comment or use of such sites.
Public Liability Insurance in Unaffiliated Football - All referees registered with their parent County FA are covered with Public Liability Insurance for all forms of refereeing within the County. This provides referees with substantial protection and cover for any incidents or unforeseen accidents that may accrue whilst officiating.
However, it is essential for referees to be aware this Public Liability Insurance is only valid in football that is appropriately sanctioned and affiliated within its parent County FA or The Football Association. Where an incident arises refereeing in any form of football that is not affiliated to either the County FA or The FA, this will unfortunately not be covered by this Public Liability Insurance and the County will not be able to support them through disciplinary action against players and clubs.
The FA and County FAs harbour a duty of care to their referees to ensure awareness of the risks such referees place themselves in through officiating unaffiliated football. It is important to realise that in recent times there is a growing number of leagues and teams that are unaffiliated in all formats of the game, including both 11-a-side and 5-a-side football.
We would suggest that you should check with your competition to ensure it is appropriately affiliated and sanctioned with either The FA or the respective County FA, by asking the competition secretary for their affiliation number. If you have any concerns or queries on the affiliation of a competition then please contact Gary Mellish at the Essex County FA to verify. This information is provided so that you can make an informed decision on whether to officiate in unaffiliated football.
