Leigh Celtic made it second time lucky recently when they were named as overall winners of the Essex County Football Association’s Female Sevens League competition as the season reached a conclusion at Powerleague in Fairlop.
Participants bid farewell to the Spring League with yet another entertaining event as ten teams took part in the fourth and final date. Up to eleven sides had been participating throughout the tournament as a whole and this time it was the monthly title that had to be settled first. Havering United competed with Newham’s Women United in the final which paired the top two teams, United emerging victorious from a competitive game.
Another title was the Fair Play Award, as nominated by the tournament’s referees. This month it was Havering’s Redden Raiders while Davenant Diamonds from Epping Forest took home the overall trophy for their continued conduct over the four months. Once all of the points had been collected the overall champions were confirmed as last season’s runners-up, Leigh Celtic, pipping Chingford Chargers who were just one point behind.
Sevens League football was set-up in 2008 after a schedule of ladies’ beginners’ sessions, which aimed to introduce local females to the game, became sufficiently popular to sustain their own small-sided competition, which meets every month. Overall winners are named but at each meeting there is a mini-final between the top two sides on points.
Female Development Officer for Essex’s London Boroughs, Sharon Brownlie, said: “The Spring League has been our biggest yet and we welcomed Redden Raiders, AIR Football and One Wish Ladies during this period which shows that we’re still continuing to evolve with the introduction of new teams. All of the sides, including the three newcomers, have improved dramatically over the past four months which is extremely pleasing to see. We were also able to provide two of the three new teams with a free Umbro kit.”
Scores and tables can be viewed in 'Related Links'. New teams joining the competition for the Autumn and Winter League will be provided with a free Umbro playing kit whilst returning teams receive a £50 Umbro voucher to be spent on kit or equipment.
