Football Aid 2010
Mark Mellor, a Level 3 Referee from Hemel Hempstead in Hertfordshire and Referee Ambassador for a children’s charity called ‘Football Aid’, has contacted us to publicise the organisation’s aim to raise money via the world of football, the basic premise being that you can play or officiate on your ‘Field of Dreams’ and the home ground of your professional playing heroes.
He says: “You can achieve your fantasy of being a player for a day - changing in the dressing room into your personalised kit, walking onto the pitch and playing a full 90-minute game in front of friends and family - a truly awe inspiring experience. I have so far personally refereed at many grounds, including Highbury, Stamford Bridge, Old Trafford and Anfield, and have many special memories from those games.”
“This year is the tenth anniversary of the Charity’s formation and, as such, we would like to spread the net even wider to envelop players and officials from all over the United Kingdom in order for them to take part in the unique atmosphere of a Football Aid game. From your local park to Upton Park, from the Old Rec to Old Trafford, from a playing field to Anfield, These just some of the journeys that are possible and achievable with Football Aid.”
“So far over 10,000 players have stepped on the hallowed turf of their favourite football club, raising significant funds for various charitable funds both nationally and with club-sponsored community projects. The late Bobby Robson was the Chief Patron of the charity and there are a whole host of other football professionals who are acting as ambassadors for their various clubs. If you would like further information on participating in the ‘Decade of Dreams’ events either as a player or a referee, please call (0131) 220 5999 or visit www.footballaid.com.”
